fg knot

i just started practising the fg knot and love it.
some say to ball the tag end and some say its not necessary.
what do you do as id prefer not dont like the idea of heat right near the line like that especially in a rocky boat
cheers

I use fg knots for all my braid - leader connentions. But I tend not to tie them on board. It usually something I do sitting around the camp at night. If I break one out on the water I'll either use another outfit or tie a clip on with a double polamar knot. I melt the leader and seal the braid tag as a matter of practise and tie lots of half hitches. Have rarely had one break. Anchored the boat with my 50lb braid / 100lb leader outfit one day (snagged). Knot didnt give way! I reckon they're the best knot to use. Just takes a bit of practice and time to tie them right.

I don't burn the end of the leader all I do is put a bit of superglue over the last few hitches. Haven't had any dramas yet, awsum knot once you get the hang of them hey

Instead of melting the tag
Instead of melting the tag end of the leader into a ball, all I do is leave a few mm of leader sticking out. In the event of the knot slips, that extra few mm will provide insurance that the criss cross braid will still hold on to the leader.
Usually the knot slips when the criss cross braided wrap is not wound on tight enough. Happens to me when the braided line cuts into my hand and I can't pull it too tight. If I notice the few mm "insurance" slides into the braided line wrap after a decent big fish then it is time to retie the knot.
Due to the direction of the leader (facing the reel), the knot will still fly unimpeded through the guides during the cast. Even during retrieving the extra tag end doesn't pose any major dramas.

I melt the end. I find it
I melt the end.
I find it goes through the guides easier if you make a ball at the end of the mono then slide all the half hitches up so they sit next to the ball, then do more half hitches over the braid by itself. If you have the mono tag sticking out too much it jams when retreiving the line.
It's a pain in the ass to do on a boat though because the lighter always goes out from all the wind.

Fg Knot.
I like the benifits of the knot and been tying a few. But i had a member of bluewater tie one on a combo of mine in the shop a few days ago and went out friday for an evening jig for dhus. On hook up it let go intantly! So its back to bimini / GT's for a while until im confident im getting it right.

Yep bimini gt for me too, heaps easier, never had one fail. Fg tho would be better through the guides for casting with heavy gear

I actually taper the mono off
I actually taper the mono off to a point over the last 5 mm with a sharp blade. My half hitches continue past the tip another few mm. What I do though is take the gloss off the mono with a nail file or something. Cant recall ever having one slip off, after passing the "tug test" before use.

Apart from saying "I can tie it"
Which I havent bothered to learn, is there any advantages other than easier casting over the Bimini/GT, because if there is I still have to work it out.

Buy a boaz line burner jet
Buy a boaz line burner jet lighter they are worth there weight in gold. Never use glue on knots. A properly tied fg needs no glue.

Bimini and GT for me too, there's something to be said about mechanical advantage over just relying on line tension. But horses for courses.

Yeah it doesn't take long as MM says as long as it's not too rough. Very rarely get bricked though, actually have only had it happen once on big ground down south.

Sounds heavy enough to me
Sounds heavy enough to me Randall, I think you need to show less mercy. Where is the rig snapping? If at the join from leader to braid I'd be checking the tying procedure. Buuuut are you going to a heavier leader on your actual rig? I use nothing less than 200lb on my main rigs up north.

since i learnt the FG from steveBW i have never tied a bimini twist the fg is a great knot i was hooked up for an hour and a half the other night and the knot held up no worries i dont burn or glue the end i finish it off with 5 turns through itself, then i cut the mono tag as short is i can so there is practicly none left hanging out
use this method

So who uses fg or any braid leader knot on a second trip?
Who reties a new one b4 they head out.
Tried the FG a couple of times now first time was good but got lazy n the second trip out it slipped quite easily on a snag.

I have a PR knot joining braid to leader and havent changed it in probably the last 10 trips and its still going strong. Also have my swivel attached to leader with a AG chain knot and havnt replaced that either. Just change the jig on the swivel.

On my trolling rig I tied an FG knot ages ago. I originally had about 3 meters of leader but every time I changed lure I cut the end off and retied it so it slowly got shorter. Now it's down to only 30 cms of leader. It lasted many trips without slipping.
I think the key is to put the crosswraps on as tight as possible so they bite into the leader. I use this guys method which uses your fingers to keep tension on the braid while doing the crosswraps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4GCH6i5L2I

As dtrain says keeping the
As dtrain says keeping the braid weaving tight is the trick. I wrap the braid around my right fore finger and thumb so I can unwind it as the knot progresses. I hold the leader tightly with my left hand. As I weave I use my teeth to grip the leader tag and pull down tightly on the woven braid after each wrap. Do this 40 - 50 times before starting your half hitches. My fg knots on my trolling rigs last forever. My fg knots on my jigging outfits get replaced regularly only because like dtrain I am always re-tying jig heads. I start with 4 - 5 metres of leader and then tie a new length when it gets down to about a metre.

the bimini, now would not go back..
Fg just sooooo much better through guides and doesnt pull like the bimini will sometimes.. etc.
I've spent half my life fishing.. The other half I have wasted..

Had to re- tie a few when using Flurocarbon leaders, tried sand papering the shine off the last inch or two and it's seems to work, also a bit of spit over the whole thing stops the braid getting cooked when burning the tag end
