FC droppers?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sat, 2008-10-25 12:24
Now, I'm not trying to invade peoples secrets
But, I decided to try flourocarbon droppers on our patanosta rigs on wednesday. We certainly had no problems getting bites, but I can't draw any conclusions from that as it just might have been productive - what I should have done was drop down a std mono patanosta rig and compared (if it didn't work as well - pass it to Sandra ).
What do you think guys? Certainly bream guys swear by FC. Is it beneficial with bottom bouncing rigs or not?

Abrasion resistance...
From what I've gleaned Colin the only benefit of Fluorocarbon as a leader is it's improved abrasion resistance compared to standard mono...
But when you look at what can be done with cheap Schneider line it's an easy decision not to bother with the expensive Fluorocarbon...
I've been giving the Schneider a go for the last few months and love it!

Yeah, I was given some, so thought I'd give it a go. It was 60lb Black Magic .
I've yet to try schneider, I know all you guys give it a very good wrap - I'm still yet to exhaust my stock of Jinkai and Black Magic.
One thing I did find with the FC - it made for nice stiff droppers that didn't tangle - though bit harder to knot properly.

FC is about its invisibility
FC is about its invisibility in water as well as its refractive ndex is closer to water than mono.
Its lousy stuff to knot, so perhaps its a better choice for crimping?

I would not use FC for
I would not use FC for tying dropper loops. If you are extending off those dropper or use 3 way swivels then FC had some advantages over mono for the extension piece that you tied your hook to.
In 60lb or less I found FC to be of greater benifit due to it abrasive resistance. I found that mono would get more quickly cut and damaged by fishes teeth right above the knot much quicker than FC. As a rule when rebaiting your line always run your finger down the line to the knot. If you feel nicks cut it off and retie. This is why I use 3 ways and at least 50cm of line to the hook. That lenght also allows inhaling fish, such as dhuies, to suck your bait in improving hookup ratios.
Not checking your line for nicks results in that big one that got away/dhuie bit me off scenerios.
Also FC goes opaque after each trip and is not reusable. I have stopped using it for paternosters and gone up to 80/120lb mono for my rigs now. Too many lost big fish lost over extended fights. I used 60lb before so I could break off when hung up to the bottom. Breaking away 120lb is not easy.

Yeah Till, your right mate - it's not the easiest to knot.
Noha - yes exactly! I used three ways - I'd hate to have to tie a dropper loop in FC and did find it very abrasion resistant and yes, 50cm is about the length of the droppers I use (good point on the Dhui!). As you say, and has been said before - whatever you use - you should always check your rigs - I check them after each drop and at the end of the session.
Appreciated guys!

I think it probably really
I think it probably really depends on the brand as well. I have some stren that knots nicely, but I get the impression that a few of the stiffer brands are a real bitch.

Yeah used unis myself and yes, four time through also. Like I said earlier, I always check the rigs each pull up. Had no problems with them slipping - even when I got buried by something big (assisted by a fairly quick drift).
As for knotting - not too difficult - just a bit harder than more subtle mono.

Use it all the time and not
Use it all the time and not a problem as of yet
As its a bit stiffer it tends to hold the bait out a bit straighter and gives less tangles..

Yeah Danny
I've found the same - stiffer and far less tangles.

I have used Flurocarbon and
I have used Flurocarbon and people fishing with schneider caught the same amount of fish (pinky Fishing out deep).
And I also used it in around the 40m area and don't think it makes a difference, still catching fish on both.
