Exmouth the slow way
I'm heading up to Exmouth last half of May and thought I would take my time getting up there to fish some spots along the way.
I'm staying with a friend in Geraldton, and wanted to jump on a day charter on the Mahi Mahi II in coral bay, then a few days LB in exmouth before the rest of the guys get to exmouth for the trip. In between that is completely flexible.
Leaving before the weekend then in exmouth mid next week. Any decent spots I should be stopping at along the way? Abroholos trip would be good, but trips are usually over the weekend, so will have to wait for that.
I wouldnt mind getting some big tailor, or perhaps some mulloway/jews from a jetty, but pretty flexible for most parts. More into lure chucking than beach fishing though.
Wagoe, Steep Point and Quobba get mentioned a lot, but I'm not sure on the suitability as I wont have 4wd (gravel roads will be ok though). Not sure about fishing steep or quobba alone either?
So any suggestions on worthwhile spots to stop?

plenty of options landbased out of Kalbari Matt
Depending on the gear you are carring but good options around Kalbari
Fishing alone along the coast around quobba etc should be fine just pick your days. Wouldn'y fish cliffs as no cliff gaff gimp to help you out.
PM WODF has he fishes the area extensively, but has headed east.

Agree on Kalbarri
Great place for chucking lures and most areas accessible by car. Apart from that, it's a great place and has a good Pub.. LOL

I fished around gnarloo
I fished around gnarloo years back, i think its called garth's rock.
Unfortunatly it was 4WD only territory at the time. My brother was helped out with a spare tyre there a few years later and the local said they knew he wasn;t a local because he only had one spare tyre.
Whats the road like these days?

Kalbarri
I have been to Kalbarri a number of times and usually fish lures. Good thing about Kalbarri is there are so many options. Great fishing for Tailor with poppers all along that part of the coast, but if the swell is up, the river also has some good options.
There are normally some small soapy mulloway around the jetty's as well as the odd black bream. Can be some great fishing if you are prepared to walk down the river and find where the clean water meets the muddy water (depends on the tide and river flow as to where this is). Have landed some quality mangrove jacks as well, but these have mostly been on baits (prawn or mulie).
Big mulloway on the beaches across the river and sometimes in the river mouth, but it is really big bait / big cast / big sinker fishing, so not really my thing.
Gnaraloo track = it is achievable by 2wd, but dont expect your car to ever be the same again. Quobba is not too bad though, not nearly as far as gnaraloo.
good luck

Kalbarri definately looks
Kalbarri definately looks like a good stopover point from what you guys are saying. They have 5hp tinnies in the river you can hire which might make for a fun session chasing bream, soapies and jacks on HB's and SP's, so might try that as well as surf mulloway and around red bluff.
Was thinking of stopping in carnarvon, but the jetty may be too high without a cliff gaff and i've heard different reports of the dodginess of the town :p
Cant say thats my style either Hayzy, but i'm certainly willing to put up with it for a little while if theres a good chance of it landing me a mulloway :p (it would ruin my baitfree streak from the start of the year though).
From your picture Hayzy, have you surfed Kalbarri? Jakes point looks awesome, but I'm not so sure it would be worth taking a surfboard on the trip (as much as I would like to)

The pic is Gnaraloo
The pic is Gnaraloo. Have surfed Jakes a bit, and it is a pretty heavy wave when it gets big. The reef there is really sharp, heaps of barnacles etc.
Not sure if the hire company will let you, but if you can take the tinny to the mouth of the river and throw poppers and slices into the wash (you will need the casting distance) there are some jumbo tailor. I have landed a couple of crackers over the years with my PB a 91cm tailor last year (at midday!!). Before I pump this up too much, the channel is very dangerous and not for the inexperienced. This type of fishing can only be done when the swell is low, and even then I tend to stay back in the river prefering a long cast towards the northern (closest) reef edge. Also, i spend a good half hour or so in the small carpark that looks over the channel before attemptiing this type of fishing to get a feel for the swell and the risk etc
