Electric motor boat rego & licensing

Hi all,

If I get a cheap 3.5m inflatable boat to go on the river with oars and if I decide to put a small 55 LBS electric outboard motor on it, do I need to register the boat for use in WA.  Do I also need a skippers ticket?  If I do, how much are the rego cost & skipper ticket cost?

6 HP and under

You don't need a skippers ticket for a vessel with a 6hp motor or less.

Not sure about Rego for an inflatable.

Power Driven Vessels

Pretty sure it would have to be registered seperatley if not attached to a larger vessel as a tender. And all the rules that apply to power driven vessels.

I’ve had the same problem

I’ve had the same problem with mine. GrumpyTugger is right but at the same time, this could be a “un- registrable” boat because of the engine size/type and nature of the boat. Doesn’t seem right to pay rego for something that you can put into a bag and bring it to the water… Would be interesting to get an answer from DPI. I bet you get few different ones if you talk to different people there. From what I found, the law is quite unclear...

Why? If its below 6hp it doesn't need registration and 55lb is a long way under 6hp.

If your boat has a motor, or is fitted for one, it must be registered with the Department and is subject to an annual registration fee. Yachts, canoes, surf skis and other craft without motors and not fitted to carry one, are not required to be registered. - http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/19093.asp

The 6HP bit is for exemption

The 6HP bit is for exemption from obtaining a RST. Any vessel that is propelled by other than sail or oars and is fitted with a power unit  must be registered.
