Bleed Hydraulic Steering?
Submitted by Big Kev on Sun, 2007-12-02 17:19
Hi All,
Does anyone know how to bleed a Hydraulic Steering System? I've seen air bubbles in the line and noticed some slack in the steering at times.I know how to bleed the brakes on my car is it the same principal only turn the steering wheel? If someone has a step by step explaining the procedure it would be greatly appreciated or any other info, Thanks.

All I do is open the filling
All I do is open the filling screw at the helm, ensure it full of oil and wind the steerin full lock to full lock until no more bubbles appear in the oil. I only get "slack " in the steering when the oil level has got low.

As Noah said
unscrew the little filler cap on the helm ensure it's topped up with oil then release one of the nipples on the cylinder a little bit to the direction of the nipple you loosen turn the wheel about 1 turn per second it will keep turning while the nipple is undone dont stop turning unless your topping up the oil keep it up until your sure the air is all out then tighten the nipplie and do the same on the other one. remember to not let the oil level drop in the helm pump or you will need to start again a bit like bleeding breaks on a car but turning the wheel instead!
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

Here goes
I just replaced mine with a new system not long ago and this is how i did it, Works fine so prety sure it is done right.
Try and get a oil bottle that will hold enough oil to bleed the entire system as to do it properly you will go through about a litre or 2 of oil. By the way if you drain the oil into a clean container you can then reuse the oil later. It is easier to do with 2 people.
As whats been said turn the wheel full lock to one side, make sure you have enough oil in the helm so not to run dry. You should be able to get a fitting to fit the screw on the helm and a clear line to run from a 1 ltr oil bottle directly to the helm screw.
Release the blead screw at the motor until open and turn the wheel full lock, close the bleed screw when full locked reached. Oil should run out at a steady flow.
Open the other bleed screw and turn the wheel in the other direction full lock, when at full lock close the blead screw. Again oil will flow at a steady rate.
If there is oil pumping in both directions at a steady rate then all good, if you find there is inconsistancy in the flow then continue bleading until all air has gone.
