Abrolhos-sorry for those who have seen enough already!

at risk of overloading everyone with Abrolhos threads, Im putting up pics from a trip I did with my kids a while back.

Two hadnt been there yet but all have plenty of boat time.

The weather was never going to be too flash, and I canned the first day only to get a call from over there "where are ya its flat calm!". The seabreeze didnt come in til 3pm and quite strong so I thought bugger it we'll go tomorrow morning.

Next day dawned with a 20 knot easterly so after a couple hours loading up we got to the ramp at 9.30, rolled the boat off and the missus buzed off with the car while we headed out the marina. Didnt make more than 1/2 a mile and the temp went from 35 to 25 degrees-F&*^K!

A quick vote among the crew, 6-0 to get a wriggle on.

The last 10 miles was 30 plus on the shoulder but we still made 18 knots no probs except I didnt have the clears up and couldnt be assed stopping so got drowned.

Rolled up to the island and the kids were off like a flash exploring and the boys throwing a line out.

Took a run down towards the top of Pelsaert Island via the shallows as there was a couple of boats there who may be members here, couldnt get thru the last little bit in the shallows though so trundled back to the usual haunt for the night

Count the heads, theres another just on the edge of the pic!

Next day was 25-35 knots again so we headed outside into the rough for the quick run to the Bity holes and the kids built a coral cairn near the star pickets. This went really well until gravity and a slab of coral conspired against one of my boys

We took a long walk and snorkel and a bit of spearing for tucker

Following day the wind moderated to about 25 so we took a run to a favourite shallow spot, dropped the pick, and I baited up 2 rods and the kids got into it. As fast as I could unhook and bait they caught double headers of baldies (15 or so up to XOS) released of course, a dozen or so pinkies and trout plus wrasse etc.

All the kids were just amped and cheering each other, I dont think I put a hook in the water myself....

Yeah I know shoulda taken one hook off....

Fish released without a weight no prob as it was only about 10 meters. After about an hour of chaos we had a feed to take home and as the breeze was picking up again we decided to stay another night. Went exploring and looking around, then back to shelter.

Next morning dawned at 25 knots SE, and didnt seem to want to drop off so we pushed off at 9.30 or so for a rough ride home. Kids laid in the cabin playing games and hooting as we took the occasional flyer at 20 knots but they did get a bit warm in there so slowed and opened front hatch to get some air through then pushed on.

Rolled into the marina to see the missus backing down the ramp, drove straight on, she hooked us up and pulled us to the top of the ramp to get off with dry feet-LEGEND!

stats-did 97 nautical miles (dont talk to me about km at sea ) for about 190 litres, a bit more than expected but we didnt have less than 25 knots at all and it was rough travelling. Two nights were 30-35.

Kids handled it no probs, smiled all the way and didnt complain about the weather.

The photos dont do the wind justice at all but on the plus side it was almost deserted over there.

Hope you enjoy the pics!

Top Report there Rob

Sun, 2013-02-17 21:53

Great to see the kids getting a reel buzz.. LOL

Fuel figures for the twin suzuki motors is impressive..

On our last trip we did 140 NM and used 287ltrs which I thought was pretty good. (2012 300hp Suzuki)

thanks!

yeah I guess it is pushing a lot of weight, probably 3 tonnes loaded. I dont have a fuel computer on this so its a guess but the old Trailcraft with 4S Yam 115 would do roughly .9nm/litre at about 1700 kg fully loaded for the islands and I guestemated a little less than double (twin 115). Both have/had 480 hrs. These two sure are quiet though.

Next run will be the long weekend I think, but Im at work/sea now til friday week.

you'll have a blast

Mon, 2013-02-18 08:39

but I do enjoy the freedom of just cruising around where ever.

Funny how the kids can occupy themselves for a full day on a block of dead coral the size of a SMALL suburban house block without any problem.

A great time, Rob

Sat, 2013-02-23 21:57

Thanks for sharing your trip photos, Rob. The kids had a ball, as did you, no doubt.

Can't wait to get back over there again....fingers crossed for some nice weather for the long weekend.

As for your fuel figures, our figures for our last trip saw us travel 115nm and we burnt 198L of fuel. You saw the amount of 'stuff' I had jammed into my Traily but I'm a bit more organised now.

regards
rusty....

PS. I noticed the new bait board getting a decent workout!!
