they dont mind coming into the shallows up there, shallowest ive caught em, 7 metres. thing with big reds is, big lumps and huge bottom, forget about it. hard flat ground is what you want. i actually found this spot by spotting some hard bottom by sight.
i use a bit of an odd rig. running 12-16 oz on mainline(leader if rod fishing) then a 40 cm trace to a tainawa hook. not many people like them, but i really do, hook choice not that important really. bait of choice and what i caught this one on-spanish mackeral stomach. dynamite on reds and rankins, tough as nails.
Off to Ningaloo this week for some sun, stubbies and strikes. Silly question, but what do you mean by Spanish Mackeral stomach. The guts, or the meat off the bottom of the fish? I'm sure I'll catch one to use as bait.

biggest for me is just under 13kg . Al Bevan has told me about jigging 40lb reds...
