The main reason I don't use an overhead when sambo jigging is because when the sambo runs the line cuts into the spool and packs it on so tight it takes ages to get off when free spooling for the next drop.. Also, id put money on my okuma drag system packing up after one of those sambos.. The shimano spheros i've got hasn't missed a beat yet and is pretty good for stopping them before they hit the containers..

IMO Eggies are an un natural way to fish. ie the line gets twisted when you wind in. An overhead supports the natural lay of the line. You will notice that all winches operate on the same principle. The advantage of egg beaters is the fast retrieve abiliy. They are great for high speed lure retrieval. Overheads cast further and handle much larger fish for a smaller reel size. The list of pros and cons is long and frankly quite irrellavent because if the angler is happy with the weapon then nothing else matters. Seeing those screaming eggies losing line at ball tearing speeds certainly gets the adrenaline going but I still pefer the overhead action. I am curious what kind of rod the guys are using. The look very strong for a small rod. Do tell??

Ahhhh, the Ian Miller 24kg Deep water jig stick.. I tell ya, these things weigh next to nothing and load up unbelievably.. For $220, it has been well and truly worth it.. Now I can't wait till i get up to Exmouth and try jigging some big GT's, trout, you name it..

I saw one of those in a tackle shop but was a little sceptical but having seen it in action I will be ordering an overhead version for my TLD

Check out ebay for them.. mate said he saw some going on there heaps cheap the other day.. he picked up a calcutta 700 for dirt cheap with only a scratch or two on it.. Im definately going to start keeping an eye on some of the fishing stuff they have on there.. few bargins to be had by the sounds of things..

IMO todays technology has enabled us to use the new eggbeaters with heavy drag settings and heavy braid. The Spheros has stand the test of time for a few already. Altho minor modification will help prolong its life even longer. You might want to check the bushing on the main gear and replace it with a bearing if its worn. Its not supported by bearings on both side.

Although i am a big fan of overheads for most forms of fishing i think when your ripping up jigs in 100+ m of water an eggy ends up being much more comfortable. Also whilst fighting a sambo from that depth, I find, it feels more balanced using an eggy as the line is always going straight down.
(saves the back a little bit). Either way, wateva you are comfortable using, as long as you have good strong line and a beafy drag system you will have a lot of fun going out and catching a few of these freight trains!!!

Yep, thats the 200 Jay, absolutely love it. Has handled some decent sized fish in its short life span, but would recommend them to anyone.

Looks good! I was thinking about getting one but being rated to 24kg line class I thought it may have been a bit heavy but after seeing it perform in this vid it looks like a great rod and still quite a bit of flex for a 24kg.
What kind of reel seat does it have?

Nah, modding the spheros is the next thing on the list to do, have to put it in for someone to do. Have no idea how to do it myself. Think they are Fuji reel seats, not 100% sure.

Mods for your spheros? U dont need much. All U need is a bearing to replace the bushing on the main gear and a Stella handle to finish it off. Otherwise bin it and get a Van Staal. No mods required for 120lb =)

I'm not upgrading to any new models in a hurry, spent enough getting the tld 50 and ozflex 15-24. But I am keen to upgrade the spheros before the oncoming sambo onslaught, just has to be done. What sort of $ damage will I be looking at to get it beefed up?

Lashed out recently on a 20000 stella, and am now in the process of looking for a good jigging rod to match it.

Does anyone have any particular rod to recommend. I'm 6'3" so i'd be looking for something with a decent length butt/foregrip.

Sure a few of the Oceanside boys could help you out there Big John.. I think Gribbo has a 24kg stick for sale, which was matched with a Stella 20000, think he's upgrading to the 80 as well, so not much point there. Sure someone can give you a few tips better than I can.

upgrading drag and adding a ball bearing is cheap-ish.

big john, height doesn't necessarily mean you need a rod that has 1/3rd butt and the foregrip 2/3rds up, leaving only 1/3 exposed (ever seen those 'custom' ones with the grip taking up 1/2 the rod to 2/3? FUGLY! Maybe its just me), just a note. =)

Better to get out and try rods yourself, than to just rely on other people's recommendations... I myself have yet to find a jigging rod that I am 100% happy with, and have gone through a few..

Personally HATE the T-Curve, sold mine off in 3 months. Look out for the Jigwrex, (how long does it take to get onto shelves??) bang for buck as close as you'll get to a technical meets beauty Japanese rod (but made in Indonesia) but only slighly above the T-Curve price.

From my experience, the 'Ian-Miller designed Jig Stick' is more a bottom bouncing one, and an insult that it is to be used as a hard-core jig rod. balance when loaded up = wrong wrong, a few more other things = wrong, just not the thing for me.

but thats just me, maybe i'm fussy and cranky =P

but at least I give honest unbiased reviews, if I like it, I'll tell people, if I don't, I'll tell people...

Also, I havent really come across something I am 100% happy with yet, because noone seems to keen on lending me their collection of Fisherman rods... or Sevenseas... see if I can get my hands on some Jigging Masters... maybe a Smith Fremantle..

I have tried a few rods myself, but I'm chasing a bit of info on products that I haven't been able to get my hands on from people who have hopefully used them, to see if the grass might be greener so to speak. Then i'll take things from there.

I'm happy to spend the $$ on a good reel and braid, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a good rod without going near the $1000 mark. After all a lot of people sneer these days at ugly stiks, but hey I've pinned the ears back on a lot of good fish with mine over the years.

take your time... because I believe alot more rods are going to be released into the market as we approach season. if you pick up the hints (maybe more like rumours, haha) .. Van Staal, Jigging Master, etc and so on.. The problem of choice is always a good problem I say, and if you can't decide between 2 good options, buy both, is another one I'd say... haha

Sort of depends how much you want to get into 'jigging'. For sambos, I'd realistically set a budget of about max $500.

I would love to bring that up to $1000 and a bit more for myself, but I can't justify it until the day I go 'doggie hunting'. *wink wink* Even then... $1000 rod justified? bah, we're anglers =)

Adam, my shimano catalogue says the T Curve Jig 200 is 2 piece, can you confirm this?

All the T-Curve Jig rods are 2 pc, inc the overheads. They're butt jointed, ie joints at the top of the foregrip.

last season all the boys were running 50lb and had no probs we lost a few fish but also managed to land a few on 6kg.
The penn reels were 9500s and a 8500 both reels performed well with no modifications to the the reels.

My spheros is the 12000fa, had it for a few seasons now, love it to bits. I'm going to get it modded up when I get some time free, so will report back to you on how much it costs for both the 12000fa and the 14000fa in the next week or two. I started sambo jigging on 30 pound and found I was loosing too many jigs to the structure, so bought a spare spool with 50 and changed over to that which made a hell of a lot of difference getting them off the bottom.

I run 50 lb on my Saltist 40 and only lost one jig ( on the Derwent) and that was from dropping it right on top of the wreck and hooking up not from a fish , I have landed over 50 Sambo's on my little Saltist and up until a couple of months ago had the same leader and gt knot for 2 years , the leader was a bit short from tying up the swivels ( from about 4 m down to 2 m) but 50 is good especially if you know how to pump and wind and not winch the fish up .

Get the fish turned and heading up at the start of the fight and you have the battle half won .

Last jigging season I ran a penn 8500 with the rachet off which caused the backwind to fail. I think this also happened on Bolt's 9500. Not wanting to jig with the rachet on upon the recommendation of Adam I got myself a 14000fa (with a $10 mod) on a t-curve for $400 bucks IMO the best value jigging combo around. It seems to be better balanced and have more grunt.

But I'm the the old 14000fa won't stack up against the Stella class reels

It will be intesting how it goes in the up coming jigging season
