At this spot pikes are very unusual, they prefer slower water, but this bugger came up the river. He loved to hunt trouts, i had him on the line, when i was flyfishing with a troutsteamer, but he cut the 14mm leader. Next time i used a wireleader and a big lure and hooked him at first cast. He had 2 rainbows in his stomach. In this fast water i usually catch rainbows and brownies and some grayling. Northern pikes prever lakes and slower parts of this river and grow up till 140 m and 20 kg. I post a closeup pic of another pike for you
I saw a good show on foxtel last year where Vinnie Jones (actor, ex soccer player) travelled across Mongolia to fish for Taimen. He finally caught a horse taimen at the end of the trip on a stickbait made to resemble a large rat swimming across the water.
Probably a very similar predator to the Pike, but I'm not sure if Pike fight as hard as this Taimen did. Was a great show.

There are Taimen in my area, but in bavarian spech they are called "Huchen", it´s the fish of the 10 000 cast. They have ben extremly decimated, but at this day we take alot of care on them, we breed them and release the one year old to the rivers. Not many fishers go for them, the best time to catch them is in winter fishing at night. The german record Huchen was caught in my town, two years ago. The fish was 26,5 kilos and 148cm. My mate is totally crazy for Huchen, he catches one every season, he goes out every winternight, even if there is a snowstorm or a temperature of -20 degrees (it´s bloody cold over here, and we have up to 1 metre of snow!!) He has deserved each of his fish!! I caught a small one this summer whilst troutfisching and released him, minimum legal sice is 80 cm, but nowbody here takes a fish smaller then a meter (it´s an unwritten law)- I´ll post a pic for you, the differences to a rainbow are,, the tail and the kopper collored back. The pic is not the best qualitiy but if your eyes are good you will see it.
p.s. pikes are good fighter, i allway get adrenalin from a good one!!!

You are right steve, love to catch them too. Pikes are good fighters and probably on of the best fish to target in europe.
Always keep the lines wet

G'Day
G'Day Andi,
Love the look of that fishing location. What other species might you catch there or is it pretty much a pike only fishery?
