Is YOUR boat compliant?

Just received DPI's Boating Communities newsletter. Thought it worth posting for those that have boats arelooking at getting one - especially new boats.

There's an article titled Registration stickers and numbers.

In the articles, and I quote (extracts):

Annual Registration Sticker

'...where on your boat should you put your annual registration sticker? The answer is on your port side adjacent to the registration number'

Registration Numbers

'It is in the interests of visibility that the location of the registration numbers must be amidships on both sides for power boats. ... The numbers must be 150mm high for a powerboat....and must contrast with the hull colour....

I'm confused

Tue, 2008-07-15 12:40

as to the requirements - i have a battered old tinny picked up from a boat yard - the advice i recieved was it did not need a rego number - and having received nothing from DPI since registering it, i would have no idea what the number would be - certainly not the old number i would guess. Pardon my ignorance but I I COULD USE SOME ADVICE.

Yup Ian, was expecting someone to post something like that. As I don't work for DPI, it would be innapropriate to give you any. Suggest perhaps you give them a call.

Does it have a HIN plate?

I believe motorised tinnies

I believe motorised tinnies (of any age) have to be registered unless they are a tender to a larger vessel, in which case they must share that vessel's rego number. Not sure whether non-motorised (rowboat/kayak/canoe) needs to be rego'd...sure some of the 'yak owners on here would have some knowledge on the subject.

HIN #

Yes, it has a HIN number Col, i will ring DPI but seeing they have taken my rego fee weeks ago,a transfer fee for a car we bought my son months ago - and sent bugger all back, i may save the frustration of talking to a " real person" and wait a bit longer. Should be renamed to Department of Infrastructure Planning - Service

i was pulled up last year by the fishery at woodmans point and he made me put my rego numbers at the back of the boat port side (it was a grumpy old man) i asked why and he said the easten states have too and now we do, also he said if your boat goes over they could still read these numbers is this true or is he blowing it out of his arse ??? he told me i would get fined if i never had them on next time i go out Undecided at the time i had them on portside amidship

I think engines under 3.5 hp didn't have to be registered, but that was before RST, not too sure these days.

Guys....

I posted this thread in a community service vain, not as a porported expert.

If you have any general issues with DPI, then ring them. Specific issues, PM me and I will try and help. Within reason (as to the number of people that PM me - etc).  Ian, my PM previously still holds mate! Wink

My two bob.

My lady works for DPI also, the rule goes something along the line of 4.5 kilowatt- 6 HP no RST required, not too sure about siz of boat though.

Dreamweaver is right in that a phone call wouldn't go astray, we are talking about a GOV dept, they might have miss-placed the paper work, haha.

All the best wishes.

As far as I'm aware, it's purely on the motor as far as rec vessels go.

Without going into bat for DPI, or any other govy dept, I can see the merit of standardising the location of boat numbers. The, should an unfortunate incident occur, or someone needs to report a boat, we all know where to look for the numbers. Same goes for size and contrast of number colour.
