winch

I have a 500kg with 3:1 ratio winch on my trailer which has broken. I was wondering if it was enough to pull my boat on and should I go a bit bigger one like a 700kg with a ratio of 5:1. does the ratios matter.

cheers

You boat looks like a 5m Cuddy

Your boat looks like a 5m Cuddy on a single axle trailer. It can't be that heavy. What broke on the winch, is it a Chinese model?. If your winch is Kaput, a two or three speed may be an advantage, fast wind up when its easy, and slower when pulling power is needed.

What are the rollers like on your trailer, proper bushings i.e. a sleeve then the steel shaft instead of a big loose bore make a big difference.

yeah mate it is. the winch is a jarrett and the stitching of the webbing fell apart.Im thinking of going to cable. I have to change a roller out. The weight of the boat is about 600-700kg.

going those rope cable versions.  under 100 dollars and up to 3000kg breaking strin.  much better than the steel cable and last longer than the straps

ill second the rope versions

they seem to last longer and safer on the hands

just wash well after use a bit of lanonin spray will last for a long time

the straps my mates have had in the past always gave them dramas

Winch rope

Go and buy the winch rope at Trailer Parts, its a bit expensive, but its made of a fancy material giving it a great breaking strain, its spliced to a hook and lasts along time.. Problem solved. If you change a roller, make sure you buy the right type of rollers for fiberglass. Hard rollers can damage the hull when being transported.

4th vote to the rope, ive had

Sun, 2011-01-30 10:48

4th vote to the rope, ive had both on my winch, cable came with boat and changed to rope version after the cable started fraying, 2 years and no damadge so far, only slight fading. i chose rope over the flat webbing as it looks tricky to have to get it flat before you hook it on the boat (wouldnt want to get the boat half way up and see the webbing was twisted.

Why replace the winch

Sun, 2011-01-30 12:57

Jarrett winches are good, why not just get a new rope? The ropes called "Steadfast Super Winch Rope" breaking strain 1500kg. About $42 from Chandlers (Whitworths) or Trailer Parts (thats the name ofthe company).

Kevlar

Sun, 2011-01-30 16:59

Go the kevlar rope over the flat strap belting.

With the flat strap the further up the trailer the boat is the harder it is to wind because the diameter of the winch drum gets bigger with each turn therefore changing the ratio.

Swear by the blue kevlar rope, out lasts the stainless wire rope and flat strap  easily.

Wire is prone to fraying and

Wire is prone to fraying and  then snapping it also hurts like crazy when you have to grab the frayed wire to stop it getting caught in the cogs. Pay the extra and go the kevlar rope.

Rope

On the winch drum you will find a hole, just feed one end of the rope through and tie a couple of good knots so it won't pull back thrpough the hole. Some have a screw down bit that clamps on to the wire/ belting, you can use this as well.

Kevlar rope

Biggest piece of crap i have ever used.......

Digs into itself under load and jams. Frays badly arround that same area and will snap after a while.

If you leave the pressure on your winch rope while driving it works itself into the wraps and the boat then gets slack. As you brake and accelerate it gets momentum and pulls in even harder. When you need it to pull out I find it deeply imbedded and damaged. I wound it on as tight as I could but after a few uses some wraps always end up slack and the one above under load will dig in.

But I must say.. I have big heavy boats and drive on, so i only need a few feet of line at most, so my line has not had to pull up my boat from initial installation and is not as hard packed as it could be. So it does not suit my style of boating.

I have used on both my boats and the results where the same. I have had it snap after 3 weeks of use due to fraying.

It came brand new on the boat i have now and after ONE use the line arround the first wrap over the winch started to get hairy/fray. Buy the second use and a 100km drive it was dug in and couldnt be pulled out. I cut it off and replaced it with webbing..
