Which 40hp 2st?

I'm planning on upgrading the outboard on the tinnie from a 25, to a 40, she is a bit of a slug with 4 people on board.

Ihave done the ring around and have got some prices, just wondering about if anyone has one, how it goes.

All looking at most basic 40, manual tilt, manual start, premix fuel.

Yamaha 2 cylinder 1 carb enduro $4500, 2 year warranty

Suzuki 2 cylinder 1 carb $4000, 2 year warranty

Mercury 3 cylinder 3 carb $4000, 5 year warranty.

So the mercury is in the lead.

My uncle in Guilderton has the Suzuki 30 with no problems in 2 years from new.

I had a Mercury 40 hp on my last tinny and never had a problem with it. I was told but not sure that they were a Tohatsu rebadged as a Merc. Anyway just my experience.

Aprox 15 years ago i bought a second hand Tohatsu 30hp 2st with only 3 hours on it. I paid $2000 and repowered my old Clark 4.3 with it. I never serviced it for ten years only replacing the plugs as needed. Altho not recomended it worked out to cost me aprox $200 per year of use and i had no problems at all untill i sold it and had it serviced first. Then the coil pack cracked.

To get a new coil and fitted with a service the price quoted was half the price of a brand new motor, So my friend who bought it opted for a new motor and after many quotes he got the same motor new (Tohatsu 30 2st ) for $3200 in late 2013. Very happy with the motor, fuel use was halved and i'm glad to say he gets it serviced every 100 hours.

I researched it for him and found the 40hp was quite a bit more in price than the 30. I was told they only make the 40 because some hulls rate that size as max hp, and it is actually a 50hp motor with a reduced exhaust system and smaller carby. Thats why they are not much cheaper than the 50hp.

As Chris says, lots of motor brand use the same engine blocks, heads and other parts. When you google parts for a Tohatsu you will find most of them listed as Nissan as with quite a few other brands.

In the end we went with Tohatsu because the 30hp came in a long leg for no extra price. It also had electric start and a will send current back to charge your batteries. Othe brands did not offer this and were between $200 and $800 more expensive.

Just my expirence and others will prefer different brands. I know most guys with Yammy's are happy with thier choice, and same with modern Suzuki owners.

I've got a 2012 yammie 40 enduro, absolute beauty runs smooth and cheap to service. Very hard to go past I think.

Mate bought a 40HP suzi off

Wed, 2015-02-04 18:17

Mate bought a 40HP suzi off the showroom floor, been nothing but trouble. Within 30hrs it was making a loud pinging sound. Returned to the dealer who replaced the the engine block , still has the same issue. It has compression problems and spent more time in the shop than on the water. I dont doubt its an isolated issue and simply got a 'lemon' but i would opt for either Merc or Yammie purely based on his experience hence the quote 'I'D stay away from suzi'.
