thats life
you must realise warranties on outboard motors run in hours and years whichever comes first if you hardly use your motor and your 5 yr warranty has expired i think its a bit rude to ask for warranty its not hondas fault you havent built the hours up on the other hand its a bit of bad luck that the issue has surfaced now but thats boating BRING OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND you gtta spend your money on something

Yep take yr opinion I thought with 244 hrs Honda would look at this seeing still brand new motor really and the motor is still show room always been cover but as you say that's life just putting out there so other boaties may take a look and maybe save some coin :)

I know its outboards you
are talking about, but its the same with car warranties, old fart and I aren't going to do 300,000 klms in three years on our 2010 Prado, we've only done 8,900 but had to take it in for a 20,000klm service, said to the bloke but we haven't done enough klms for the first 10,000 let alone the second bloody service, more or less stiff biccies bring it in for the 20,000klm service or you will viod your warranty, felt like telling him to well you know what off.

Roberta-you DONT have to take
Roberta-you DONT have to take it to the dealer for service (maybe only the initial one), that precedent has LONG been set by Consumer Affairs.
Honda-always been notoriously expensive purchase and parts. Excellent engineering but then so are Yamaha.

Same as outboards
Rob unless your doing a warranty claim. I am getting a competent outboard mechanic on this 400 hour service

Practically all cars will
Practically all cars will require servicing for XX000km or every year if you aren't driving it a lot. All the fluids are still sitting there, things that may need to be cleaned aren't getting cleaned, etc. As a hypothetical case, if you bought a brand new car and it sat there for 3 years, you might expect a couple of minor things to need to be checked (but maybe not a lot fixed). Obviously you'd expect it to work, but then for the first few services you don't normally expect much to need replacing anyways, but they do it so they can be sure problems don't pop up later (well, presumably)
(as Rob said (while typing my message), it doesn't have to be dealer serviced, BUT it will likely need to be serviced at an authorised place if it's been a year since last service, regardless of the km, for the warranty from Toyota (not the dealer))

Design life of this sensor??
I thought Honda had a pretty good reputation... In saying that I'd be really surprised if they didn't look after you on those cost of parts.
Do the ring around on the retail cost of replacing this part. 244 hrs on an outboard is nothing - The design life on one of those sensors is a few thousand hours so hiding behind this 5 yearly warranty is weak at best.. In Australia anything sold here from a retail perspective has an "expected life". The question is a simple one- is this O2 sensor failed due to manufacture, or could it have been prevented by something you could have done to prevent it. The key, if you have a case, is the design life of one of these sensors
Hope Honda do look after you _ keep us in the loop

I was devastated when toyota wouldn't
replace a fan belt that broke after 7 years as well.Working on the theory of how much work something has done for warranty then the v8 ss vk peter brock commodore in the shed that has only done 3500 odd kms is still under warranty thenSWEET.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Having worked for a major
Having worked for a major manufacturer, not boat related, and having dealt with alot of warranty claims, you all have to realise that a line has to be be drawn in the sand. Its all in the terms and conditions that you sign when purchasing the product or that you accept by default.
Otherwise where would we be motors costing 100K each due to the potential open ended warranty liability.
However, you would be surprised just how many things get approved for warranty even when it is clear that there is not a claim.
As others have said check out the history i.e. recalls etc you may get a pleasent surprise
Cheers

Actually it depends on were
Actually it depends on were you get the motor serviced.
Yamaha have a Option called good will warranty. If you get your motor serviced at a Yamaha dealer all the time and you have a problem out of the warranty period the dealer can request "Good will Warranty" on your behalf. This is something i used alot when working in Yamaha camp.
Problem is though that the dealer has to initialize it and when a repair is done under warranty often they get less money for the job than retail so they often just keep it quiet.
I had a 130 hp Yamaha once that we pulled down as it had a slight noise. A year and half out of warranty and found the gudgeons although not gone were just on boarder line spec. So Yamaha paid for a complete rebuild free of charge for the customer. Funny part was all he did was whinge that he was inconvenienced for a week with out having a boat..Some people you can never please..

City boy .oxygen sensors on
City boy .oxygen sensors on hondas are known for corrosion internally.if you motor sits low or you drift backwards and get a splash of salt water up the exhaust and onto the sensor that's all it takes.the new oxygen sensor is not compatible with old ecu so they change both.i would be calling Honda as it such a common problem.mine did this and there were 2 others in for same problem.
