Transom mount v's Faired transducers

So my bro's trip to steep point has cost us a transducer. No real idea what happened, he just mentioned they was missing one day. They were spearing, so they don't really use it that much.

Now, I'm planning on moving my electronics onto a different hull sometime, a glass one.  Do people think that a faired through-hull transducer is worth the effort?

I'm talking about a Raymarine A65 with an Airmar P58 v's B45

The strakes on the tinny hull meant the sounder was always pretty ratty at speed and there are strakes on the new tinny, but perhaps that is less of an issue with the thru-hull ones?

if im correct you cannot use a thru-hull transducer on an ally because the beam cannot shoot thru it. i believe they are only for fiberglass and polly boats

Ahh the faired ones mouth thru the hull, they don't shoot thru them.

V's

Not so much concerned about the tinny, more for if there are good benefits to moving to the faired style on the new boat. The new boat is just a 15' glass one.

go with!

Dont waist your time with "through hulls' on glass, go with a "Shoot through" and silicone in on the right angle. Much better screen read than transom fit especially on smaller boats with hull lift/airation!

Ahh you mean like the P79?

I'd lose temp readings I guess, is that a big deal? Are these ones, which seem to be a bit of a compromise worthwhile? B117

trannys!

Sorry for delay mate, been busy in the shop this morning!

OK, go the 520-5PSD PUK type and silicone in!

P79, sold them before with mixed performance!

Temp loss not an issue when you way up the other benefits you gain!

Through hull ie B117? hard one, most through hulls get a "mid-performance" rating as compared to PUK which gets an "in hull" High-performance rating and the ones i've sold to customers have had plenty of good feedback!

extra transducer

Not sure if im right here but on the water temp front,  Some of the sounders have a second transducer input for sounding in different directions, Not sure how much a transducer is, but if you transom mount it you will still get temp.

I dont know how important it is either as I dont use the function very often, but alot of posts on here mention fish comming on when the water temp changes.  I think this is more important for change of seasons rather than during a single day while out on the water.

Ahh no worries. I guess the 520-5PSD PUK is a furuno part and despite being probably made by airmar like everyone else's transducers, there is no direct equivalent for raymarine.

Interestingly raymarine rate both the B117 and P79 as mid performance.

I think the P58 is no longer and the entry level is now the P66?

That is certainly something in favour of the shoot-thrus.
