Submerged object offshore Garden Island

we collected a heavy submerged object on the way to FFB on Wednesday ........flat calm conditions so travelling at 24knots in deep water when we hit a speed bump......bent prop but absolutely no scouring, bent shaft, damaged gear box and huge piece missing from skeg ....assume a submerged piece of timber or turtle

Thank goodness for insurance as damage quoted at almost $9000

Be aware that you can't always see obstacles .....roughly 4nm @256 from the GI Carnac channel markers

HMAS Submarine reports being rammed

Fri, 2016-04-01 16:57

The object wasn't long black and cylindrical was it. LOL

Have you checked your charts of the area to see if there is something reported/located in that area. Sorry couldn't help myself with the joke about the sub.

 $9000 ????

What else was damaged ?

That seems a hell of a lot for a damaged gearbox....even if the whole box needed replacing !

and we were in deep water, I first thought we had hit a sunken cray pot float encrusted with the usual crap, it really just felt like a bump but the vibration thereafter indicated something more serious.  Been in the game of boat insurance for a number of decades and if didn't know better looks just like several seen where turtle impacted....have seen the occasional one off GI late in the summer season but how unlucky would that be ?

Yea right....I guess if your traveling at that speed or any speed in fact, if one of the blades of the prop manages to strike something fairly solid when already under load it probably takes less than you would think to bend the shaft. I would say you have a stainless prop ?

Once the shaft bends then the motor would more than likely continue to damage things while it's unbalanced until you have time to pull back the throttle and try to work out what happened.

Your right though.....it sounds unlucky indeed.

There seems to be a bit of unlucky things hapening lately. With this and the boat fire from a stray flare.

Got a pic of your prop?  If

Got a pic of your prop?  If you hit something like a big shark or animal the prop will have distinct look about it.  Prop blades will be curled over anywhere from slightly to completely rounded with no other damage or paint removed.

quite possibly a turtle. I ran over a shark the other day. Was cruising at 29knots and bang! Looked around into my wake and there was a 3m shark cut up in pieces. The twins tore it to pieces

Whale

Sun, 2016-04-03 08:16

Two years ago whilst fishing at Coral Bay i ran straight over the back of a whale doing about 24 knots. The bloody thing surfaced in front of me about 20 mtrs in front of the boat, no time to reac except to yell out hold on FXXK me a whale, luckly skimmed over his back, a big bang lots of white water  every where. The motor had stalled and after a short time realising what had happened we started the motor and the only damage done was a bent prop I had changed the stainless onr to a ali one the week before thank goodness. A lucky escape and now when l see one out there, i think about that day.
