Star Boats pictures/info?

Hi,
just wondering if anyone has any snaps/info/experience with these, just by chance. A few seem to turn up in the Quokka on occcasions, mostly 10 - 20yrs old.
I hear they were locally-built, but the business has since closed. I also heard the designer later went off to build some high speed cat ferries down Henderson way, but having done a lot of commercial boats on the way. I'm also told that the Penguins ala Auslobster are done by a few ex-employees of the same firm.
Just trying to get an idea of how they shape up, beamwidth, deadrise etc and how they perform at sea.

just sold mine to Al. great boat rides well but 10 yrs old im pretty sure they stopped getting built in the 80's

Hi,as far as I remember,Star Ali boats were made by Julious Savvarei out at Penguin Marine,if so they are a very good boat and well built,but as with all ali.look for stress crac
ks and corrossion particularly as the age is on them,a friend had a 21ft star and was very happy with it

Star boat
Had a 24 footer with a 470 mercruiser.Was a bit narrow for its length,probably due to having to go overwidth--8ft.Other than that was quite a good sea boat,large icebox inside big lock up cabin,plenty of deck space.Could fish 4 large blokes from one side without listing over.Not sure where they were built.could have been in eastern states but not sure on that..Have fun with your enquiries

I saw a few snaps in the
I saw a few snaps in the boatrader mag, including a 19'6" one with a penta inboard. It looks like a nice hull although it would be tempting to mod the transom on em.
8' seems a pretty common width for Stars 5.3m and up, I guess they just built them as wide as they could before having to get a permit to trailer them around.
Pretty sure they're WA made, I never see them forsale in the eastern states sites.

Star boats
Star boats are now very long in the tooth. They were good solid boats built by John Rothwell in the 70's and early 80's in Perth & Geraldton before the operation moved to Brisbane. Rothwell then started Austal Ships. The testament to the build quality is the number still around.

The Penguin ali boats were a different beast under their own label.
Got some photos of Star boats but can't load them - sorry. There was a cheap one for sale (18' cuddy) in Exmouth recently for $10k. With a new motor it would have been a good buy. Keep away from the stern drives.
They ride like most older traditional ali designs. Reasonable and wet.

Thats a very informative link, thanks - nice work. Pretty much explains why you don't see any Stars newer than 86(?).
Actually there was one on the market recently that was volvo penta inboard, but it was too long and I doubt I'll see anyting below 5.5m with an inboard, but I'll heed the warning anyhow.
They do look a bit old-fashioned compared to what else you will find in yards, but then nothing else is as old (&plate), thats still going and near my price bracket.
I'm half-tempted to break out the ali welder and try a kit, but I'm not sure its really that much of a saving.

Way back when
Till, Star boats originated in the very early 70's. They were built by the Rothwell brothers. I bought the 7th boat they built - 308 holden coupled to a jacuzzi jet 6m long wide beam very shallow draft. Have photos somewhere if I dig deep. Heavy plate quarter inch hull. Strong as but horrible to keep on a straight course when trolling. Used it around the Black Rock passage and coral down at Ningaloo station for Spaniards and spanglies and that's where the shallow draft paid off but it was very thirsty on fuel. That said couldn't fault the boat building. John moved on and up to bigger things with Austal while his brother (Alan?) built or bought a fleet of hobie cats and hired them out of Dawesville for a few years.

Cant comment yet on it but it does seem like a solid boat thats for sure, just fitting her out with GPS and a sounder, plus a few other little luxuries.
In a few weeks it's gunna be ready, just gotta get my skippers ticket in the mean time then I'm going fishing.

Almost done.
Finder and GPS installed, both colour and top shelf units,Compass went in today aswell just in case GPS fails.
Wiring is all neat n tidy now and the bait board upgraded.
Next is the kill tank up the back and Ice box up front, and a an anchor trolley so I dont have to climb out to set/retrieve the anchor.
Skippers ticket is booked later this week, then I'm going fishing, no more mucking around it's time to get serious!!

Star Boats
Don't know if you are still reading this post , just thought I would let you know my mate has bought a Star Boats 35' , has a Detroit Diesel v53 T , it is in very good nick , we just gave it a good scrubbing , new antifoul and a general tidy up .
The Detroit needed both turbos rebuilt and one pong box replaced , other than that just a good flush , new oil and away we went , my mates other boat is a 27 chivers with a Merc v8 stern drive , so he rekons the Star should " get up on the plane " just as quick" I am having trouble convincing him to adjust his expectations , she does 13-14 knots easily , I rekon she cruises lovely at that speed , being a rather wet boat , anything over that speed and your'e getting drowned anyway .
