Squid in Mandurah
Submitted by Ericl on Wed, 2024-05-22 20:58
Hi
Have 4 nights mid June in Port Bouvard Marina. Taking a small ali boat and hoping to catch some squid. Can anyone advise if there are weed banks banks out from the cut that could produce squid. Happy to also try for whiting and KG's if there are any in this area. I guess there wont be much chance of crabs at this time of the year.
Thanks for any suggestions
Cheers

Head around to Melros for
Head around to Melros for squid mate. It's about 4km south of the Cut but you can also beach launch there and drift the area just off the beach launching area.
Smaller KGs around 30cm you'll find in the big sandpatch at the SE part of the Cut just before it goes out into the estuary. Check Google Earth and you'll see it.
Big sandwhiting about 4NM ENE from the Cut entrance and there's a few lumps holding big skippy on the way out. I landed a 55cm KG here too.
I do have a killer KG spot with big models out from Halls Head but you can find that one yourself lol. Never tried for crabs this late but it's been a warm autumn so you never know... try the deeper water south of the science tower in the Harvey section (there's another tower up Coodanup way).

Thanks
Thanks Jackfrost80.
I can make out most of the info but I am a bit confused by 4NM ENE. Wouldn't that put me back in the estuary ?

i have caught lots of squid
i have caught lots of squid at the estuary end of the cut drifting over the weed banks there, but i think the sand that is washing into the estuary has covered up alot of the weed banks and they havent been there the last few times ive tried. i have also caight them down where frosty said and alos in hte deeper water 6-10mtrs. just have to keep moving around intil you find a few. havent tried for years though. you can also go north out from the cut and just out from the beach launching area there we have caught them as well. in the north port canals there are also a few. you can see the black ink on the concrete.

Thanks for the update Jackfrost80 and eziliving
Looking forward to trying the spots. My grandchildren will be delighted with any squid, whiting or herring we manage to catch

Eric I've also caught smaller KG's in the sand patch that Frosty was talking about just inside the Cut.
