Rope For Electric Anchor Winch
Submitted by Mulie on Wed, 2011-04-06 17:46
Hello, thought a few of you might be able to help me out. I bought a 2nd hand 6m glassy with an electric winch on it. I think it has the wrong type of rope on it (12mm silver) as the winch will not pull the rope unless I help it through (it just spins on the rope). Any ideas?

Think you need the 8 braid.

You need a good nylon rope
You need a good nylon rope spliced to your shortlink chain, opposed to silver. Alternatively, some boats tend to run an all chain rode.

All chain has knobs on it.
All chain has knobs on it. People seem to tangle with too much chain out near reef. I'm sure its fine around sand, but whats to fish around sand? ;)

8 Plait....
That rope is what most anchor winches require and the soft lay is better. Run 10m of short link chain to suit your winch and then say 50m of 8 plait rope.....that's what my boss runs on his boat and works well.

Type
What type of winch is it?
I have a Maxwell on mine and it has a small plastic piece inside that tensions the rope, if that has come loose or broke, it will give you the same results......
But you still need to buy the right rope
