the steering is still binding. Should i use a graphite based grease on the moving bits, or could it be something else? trouble shooting ideas to identify the issue???

when i disconnected the steering arm from the motor the motor swings beautifully through a full arc. not that. i haven't tried leaving the cable attached at the motor and disconnecting the cable at the helm to see if it is inside the helm that is the issue???

forget grease
thats the problem any oil is far better for freeing up your steering, once it is free lube with oil not grease

Brillant! Rubbed the steering rod with normal car motor oil, moving as free as a bird! that will now become an "every use" maintenance item.
Thank you, saved me a shit load of work pulling it all apart again!

yep you definatly need to replace your helm and yes dont lube it with grease as it dries up and jams your steering use oil

i suspect it might be dried up grease that is causing the issue. when i had it all pulled apart , i sprayed a shitload of degreaser in and flushed it out, and pumped some new grease in, but there still seems to be dried up grease on the steering rod.

You need to drill out the pivot tube. A 16mm wood turning bit with a few extensions should do the trick..

Note to self and anyone
Note to self and anyone reading this thread contemplating changing their steering cable...
Important points:
When you remove the cable check:
the "O" ring inside the bearing tube - mine had perished and the steering seized on me again because water was getting it - end result, another new cable....
don't use grease, use a good quality oil
check the tube hasn't corrodided. if it has, it may need machining or replacing.
if in doubt, it ain't that expensive to get a professional to do it...

not everyone has the $ to put on hydraulic steering.
one thing i have found good is inox, spray heaps down the cable housing before you put the cable in, and every now and then give it another spray. keeps it clean and free of moisture. i used it on all moving parts of the steering and all over the motor. worked a treat. only put onto this stuff after i busted the steering in my first boat. and i will use it on my next as well , when i get one that is
