Hi all,
Just got this 24ft home made boat 2.7 ton steel hull had a 302 v8 ford in it and has 15 hrs reconditioned so pretty sweet if any one interested but we are ripping it out cause of the price of fuel and looking at new 350hp yamaha what you all recon will it be a good move

Not too many steel hulls of that size around. Mostly due to weight. Thats going to be a seriously heavy rig once its all decked out.

have you checked out the weight difference between the motors as i suspect the yanmar will be quite a bit heavier and you will need to keep that in mind when balancing up the boat. She looks great let the sea breeze blow who cares

I will be adding extra drums tomorrow for sure the 302 i recon will be arround 280 kg to 380 kg it is a big motor so hopeing it will be around the same other wise have been looking at pods that will help any one know a good person to deal with in Perth for a pod

why would you look at pods?
or even petrol for that matter?
To be brutally honest mate, Id look at putting a marinised truck diesel in it with either a shaft or leg, and keep it as a semi displacement.
If your going to spend $30K plus to buy a Yam 350 V8, might as well sling in another 15-20k (much of which your going to spend on this to get it up and running) and buy a yank import if you want to go fast.
These sort of rigs can make fantastic put put boats, solid strong and economical. But try and make a speed boat out of it will cost you greatly in every way, running gear, fit out, fuel and resale later

302 vs 350
a 350 yammie will drink about 120-140 litres an hour WOT compaired to I am guessing about 80-100 for the 302 Ford but there isn't going to be any great difference in speed because once you reach hull speed you must really increase the horsepower to get a small increase in speed.
If it was mine I'd be going diesel shaft drive or V drive and swing a big prop rather than sterndrive or outboard

Hi Adam,
not sure how much experience you have with boats and or tinkering on them -but if the motor in the boat is new(ish) why not use it as is for a season - this will give you time to consider if you really want to spend extra $$ on it or use that to put toward something else.
