Perth Metro Mackerel Action

Nothing gets me more excited than a metro mackerel.

Caught one this time last year when hunting for salmon about 100m from West End at Rotto!

Recent reports are talking it up like there is a plague of them out there - reports of catching them off Woodman Point Jetty, Spaniards and Sharkies LEAPING out at the end of the Freo Moles. Seems to be more speculation than fact but there is talk of schools around the Mewstones and Three Mile... BUT...

No one on here or any other forum seems to be reporting anything - especially from boats.

How are fellow fishwrecked fishers fairing? Do I venture forth or wait it out? If any success, is my trusty red head Halco Laser my go to?

Love to hear any reports - particularly from anyone heading our from my local boat ramp - Hillarys, or around Rotto.

I tried trolling for a mac

Sat, 2016-02-27 21:17

I tried trolling for a mac for several hours today and the conditions were excellent....but unfortunately no luck on the mackerel. So headed out to a FAD and the fish were boiling here and there.

So I trolled around for a while....no takers.

I then drifted past the FAD throwing out a little metal ....nothing after several passes.

I then started cubing up some pillies and threw one cube on a hook and sent that floating behind the boat in the trail ....Bang ... Hooked up a Mahi-Mahi....great fight and got it to the boat.

I was solo so tried to net it but it just wouldn't go in and darted off several times...manged to get it back to the boat and decided to just grab the leader and haul it into the boat.. It came out of the water kicking and thats where it all went pear shaped.

It landed on my bait board where it flipped out and then threw the hook so I dropped the rod and got my hands on it but it went berserk and slipped out of my hands and landed on the gunwale where it sat for approx one second ....long enough for me to get one hand on it before it flipped a few times rapidly and slipped back into the water. I guess it was about 700 - 800mm.

I then sat down and had a little cry !!

Found a mass flock of Muttonbirds smashing the water on Wednesday out from Freo, had the binoculars there and saw fish planing around on the surface, we got within 100m of the school actively feeding and then it broke away into 2 parts, we pursued one with no luck, we were trolling Halco Laser pro 190's pretty sure. That's fishing !

Ocean Surface Temps

Thu, 2016-03-10 19:14

Was just looking at the SST on BOM and it looks like the Perths waters are slowly warming up.

If the trend continues it could be up by as much as 2 degrees by the weekend...  21.6 to 23.6 is a promising change.

I think I'll have a crack if the weather holds up.

Back of Rotto

Wed, 2016-03-23 05:59

Had a sniff around the North West side of Rottnest - sounder was saying only 21 degrees on Saturday. Needless to say no macks but we didn't try long.

Hope the water temp comes back up. Have caught macks behind Rotto in previous years in May so there is always hope!

Wed, 2016-03-23 16:29

I was down at Preston Beach last weekend and could see macks free jumping about 150-200m offshore and they looked to be of decent size. Always the case when you havent got any gear with you!

Mackies still a chance

Thu, 2016-03-31 06:01

Saw a report on FB of at least two Spanish Mackerel being caught in Perth metro waters. Great to know there are a few around. So the decision is to chase Mackies or Salmon? Great to have both options. .
