OR Marina to Close Ramps for 14+ Months

14+ months is absolute bullshit. It's already hard enough trying to launch NoR for >$10 a pop and I already don't bother over Xmas anymore. Time to start heading down to Woodies and finding some new ground.

With limited boat facilities

Wed, 2024-04-03 13:38

With limited boat facilities nor its going to make it so hectic unless many decide to go elsewhere thinking it will be shit then it will be better for the ones that stay using the ramps.

Shutting down 4 ramps is crazy.  But better than closing the whole lot

Bill I heard that the funds for the Broome ramp ended up constructing the very impressive facilities at Augusta for political reasons. Is that on the money?

Yep bang on the money Dave.

Yep bang on the money Dave. Appeasing the nationals  and we had a useless labour minister here so was never going to get funded here. Still nothing happening here and what they designed will not work anyway. I'm leaving in a couple of months and heading south so I won't see anything happen here.

 Yeah a charter operator

Fri, 2024-04-05 10:46

Yeah a charter operator explained that to me. That was after we helped do the beach launch near the fishing club. Just crazy in a place that has tides the size that Broome has!

So I had a spare moment and

Fri, 2024-04-05 12:24

So I had a spare moment and put together the following and sent it to my local MLA, members for Hillarys and Joondalup, Joondalup Mayor and Ocean Reef ward Councillors, recfishwest and Karl Langdon at 6pr. Feel free to join me hammering away gents.

Good Morning Margaret

Congrats on your upcoming retirement and thank you for you dedicated representation over many, many years.

The Dept of Transport has advised on social media that Development WA are reducing the capacity of launching facilities by 50% at Ocean Reef Marina from mid-April until ‘mid 2025’ as per the attached screenshot of the post.

I’m unsure if you’ve seen Ocean Reef Marina (OR) and Hillary’s Boat harbour on a nice weekend day letalone during peak times like school holidays etc but it is already nearly impossible to head out on a nice weekend day at 6am and impossible most days if you need to launch after kid’s weekend sports. I have attached a picture from a weekday in early December illustrating the stress on current arrangements. Obviously, the OR development will result in some disruption and the closure of 4 ramps is going to have a disatrous effect of the ability of north of the river boaters to be able to launch into the ocean as  a significant number of boats are redistributed to Hillarys and Mindarie.

The post mentions that there will be temporary parking available at OR from mid-April however what are these and will this be the same capacity as the current parking allocation which is already not enough during peak times?

Will the flow on effect from OR Marina to Hillarys be taken into account to improve the parking situation at Hillarys? In particular, the designated trailer parking bays are currently ‘trailer parking only’ until only 12pm so this clearly needs to be adjusted to later in the day like 2pm to allow for crossover between morning and afternoon boaters and/or expanded to meet increased demand. Boat owners at Hillarys and OR pay over $10 to launch a boat unlike other marinas such as Woodman Point, Peron Point, Busselton, Jurien, Augusta (… the list goes on) where it is all free to use so we pay for the carpark and will soon require greater access to it during peak times.

To recap, I have two key queries:

• What is the temporary trailer parking arrangements for OR from mid-April to mid 2025 and will it be the same capacity as current arrangements? How will this be managed?
• Will the trailer parking at Hillarys be adjusted to later in the day (e.g. 2pm) and/or expanded from mid-April to mid 2025 to manage the expected redistribution of boats currently launching at OR.

Whilst I am on a roll can we please have some tie off cleats installed on the jetties at Hillarys so that skippers can tie and untie their boats to the jetty quickly rather than having to tie up around the guide posts. Hillarys is the only ramp I can think of that doesn’t have tie off cleats and I contacted DoT about this and better parking signage a couple of years ago and whilst they did improve the signage, I didn’t receive a response regarding the tie-off cleats and they wre never installed.

Regards

Frosty

Apparently Hillarys was crazy on Saturday after the MAAC Bluewater Classic. The video I saw would have meant some very impatient people. Not the time to practice reversing a trailer!
