no power
hi all
i took my boat out yesterday for the first time in a while its a 15ft ally with a 30 hp 2stroke mariner. i always start it once a week and it always starts. so we launched at palm beach and headed out ,but could only get 10kmph out of it according to the gps, it was going to take an 1hr 25m to go 7kms to the d9. i changed the spark plugs cause i always carry spares being a 2 stroke but no difference. there was a little resistance from the throttle leaver when putting it forward in gear, i was able to push the leaver all the way forward but no power.but it was very hard to get it back to neutral and when i did it just revved its box off sitting there.so i turned it off restarted but it still revving realy high i put it in gear to get back to the ramp and it jumped into gear, i presume it did this because it was revving high made it back alright.now would anyone know what i should look at first at possibly being the cause, either the control box or cables etc etc any info would be greatly apprciated thank you.

Darryl check that the timing
Darryl check that the timing advance is free to move. I know thats not the proper name but it is the thing you can see that turns with your throttle linkages, under the flywheel. Dont take the flywheel off, just check by turning the throttle and you will see it move around. It should have some resistance but bugger all. It might have got some salt water or corrosion in there and not be coming all the way back when you take the enginge down to idle. This will cause the engine to rev. Also there is friction adjustment at the front of the handpiece, try backing that off to make the handle easier to move. The engine will be a bit hardeer to put into gear while it is reving.
How old is the fuel ?
This is hard to describe over the net but hopefully you will understand my double dutch.

Dakka, i had a similar
Dakka, i had a similar experience with my 90hp johnson. I was at the ramp and was struggling to get from neutral to reverse, when it also started revving its box off, but mine jumped into forward somehow and thrust me towards the slipway. I pulled the cutout key which stopped it but i still hit the ramp, looked like a goose! Anyway i ended up needing to replace the throttle control box and cables(and repair the damaged prop!), and it has been sweet ever since.

What is it with Mariner's? I
What is it with Mariner's? I have a 75hr old 2005 model 40hp Mariner 2-stroke and have had something similar occur.
I just had the CDI (powerpack) go in my engine, and a month before that an ignition coil. The engine ran fine sometimes, missing others, and just did not have the full ignition power I had come to expect when it ran fine. I suggest you start er up, check that each cylinder has ignition from the high tension cables (pull them off using some insulated pliars, and look for the zap - avoid electrocution as they kick like a mule). If this is OK then hopefully your coil and CDI are OK - if not you will be up for $90 coil - or *gulp* $550+/_ CDI (rare apparantly).
WIsh I had an Evinrude E-TEC...

had a look at the boat today
had a look at the boat today with the cowling off. i noticed that when putting boat in gear only one cable was working the gear cable, so had a play around with the throttle cable for a while i still couldnt push or pull cable in or out. i then noticed i had a throttle friction control knob on the front of control box. the bugger had siezed tight on me so after undoing it with some multigripps i had movement put the linkages back on and now she works. so i went to boat shop got some teflon gease (as advised by them ) went home and greased everything up took her out on the water and all is good touchwood it only cost $13 this time cheers for everyones response thanks

Gday Glad you got it fixed
Gday
Glad you got it fixed on the cheap,
I have a similar problem on my 98 Mariner 15hp, I can start it and change gears ok but when I get to a slow speed, as I give it more throttle it revs high without giving me any powere and without the boat gaining anymore speed? I can only get up to 1 or 2 knots tops no matter how hard I rev.
Help would be much appreciated.
cheers

Sounds like a gear box
Sounds like a gear box problem, if the engine is revving high and its in a gear the engines working fine just not able to transfer to the prop to gain speed.
