NEW BOAT (MAYBE)

Hey peoples i just went and saw the guys at Preston Craft who built my boat i have now. I walked in there and saw a alloy rib. It is an awesome looking boat and looks like it would be pretty good out on the open water. I got talking to then and asked if they could build me a 7.5m walk around. To which he " no problems at all". What does everyone think of these?

Fantastic all weather boats

Fantastic all weather boats but I don't know whether the inflatable sides are gaff, tag pole and hook proof.

I'm not 100% Daisy

but I think the sides are alloy as well - much like a Stabi Craft?

I have no personal experience with them, but I hear they are fantastic boats.

EDIT: just checked Prestoncraft website, and they aint alloy - so I'm iclined to agree with Daisy, although as I said no personal experience with them.

They use this style of boat, so I guess that is a commendation on all-weather ability and stability....

i think this one is about

Fri, 2009-01-09 08:40

i think this one is about $79,000. THe tubes on the outside are pretty strong and take a fair bit of deliberate damage for them to puncture so hooks and so on wont be a problem. As for a direct gaff shot i think from what i have heard it should with stand it due to the shape and makeup of the tube material. I asked the question on if one does get punctured and the boat still floats and so on. The alloy hull has massive chines and then the tubes as well it should be nice and dry. I might get them to price me up the 7.5m walkaround now and find out turn around time. WHo knows might be a 7.2m Preston craft for sale soon if i do itLaughing

RiB inflatable

Fri, 2009-01-09 08:45

If it is inflatable then they are able to be punctured, not sure how easily, but I've seen one of the department issued ones up here not looking in such a good state!

I don't think they're all

Fri, 2009-01-09 10:34

I don't think they're all that heavy and they are easy to put up on the plane, did a couple of trips in the black SAS ribs when I was a chocco and they were powered similar to what your talking. Don't exactly know how fast we were going but it would've been in excess of 45 knots, a slight chop and you came off feeling like you'd been hanging off a jack hammer all day.

They're like big sponsons

Fri, 2009-01-09 20:43

They're like big sponsons Fishy that give you lift on the plane and stability in the rough stuff, cornering etc, also making them virtually unsinkable (very positive floatation)

Hi Ya,

From a fishing point of view I'd have thought that higher sides would be better for the fisho's.  Any thoughts?

Cheers.

The tubes are high volume ,low pressure air and compartmentalized,EG.sections,so if one compartment should get a hole the air will not just gush out,and depending on the hole size these can be fixed in sit u,but the other compartments will keep the craft buoyant, operational. The Regiment here and in most other countries use Rib's, as fast ,easy to deploy reliable craft, the tubes are UV stabilized but we do get intense sunshine at times .Also, the ones I have been involved with ,were tubes and glass fiber hulls, and as they sit high in the water, wind can play with them a bit, lots of dollars, but the motor would be around the high teens near twenties, jersey

I heard they are awsome on the water in most conditions, but even with a walk around, do you think there is enough deck space for fishing?

The one in the pic is only 6.1

Wed, 2009-01-14 06:06

The one he wants to build is 7.5 so will have more deck room. The good thing with these ones is that they dont rely on the floaties to keep them stable .You could rip the ring off compleatly and still get home.I all the pics the ring almost never touches the water.

Yeh if i do go the 7.5m then it would be 3.0m wide which should give plenty of room for fishing.

It would be a pain in the ass to get over width towing permits all the time wouldn't it? Or do you have a berth?

No berth so towing it when i want to use it. From my house to the boat ramp is like 5 mins so i prob would try my luck and hope the cops cant tell the diff. Living in mandurah you tend to get away with a little bit. Driving to exmouth with it on the other hand would be a pain in the ar$$3:(

You don't need a permit. All you need is a oversize sign across the back of the boat and a orange flashing light on the roof of the car.You can only tow in day light hours and not on the freeway, so a trip up north will be good.Greg

I have used Zodiac ribs in the Army and they are the best craft out there ,for there durability, next to none. You would have to hit it pretty dame ''HARD'' to put a hole in it.Im sure it would be the same with the Preston Craft.M8 these things would OWN in any off shore fishing..... Sea State what Sea StateCool
