Need boat fishing gear
Hi Guys/ Girls,
I need to get a hold of some fishing tackle for the boat as all I have is land based stuff. (Rods, reels, the lot!)
I dont have very much to spend (says the wife) after buying the boat, but was wondering if any of you could point me in the general direction to get me started. I'll be more than happy to get some second hand stuff if I knew what to get.
As Ive never fished off a boat and new to WA, Im clueless as to what to buy.
Is there such a thing as a general purpose boat rod/ reel to get me started out without burning the old pockets. I've seen really cheap outfits on Ebay which Im unsure of and have never heard of.
I can't say what species I'm going to be targeting as I simply don't know yet. All I know is that Im after some bigger fighting fish than you generally get from shore. Any ides of what to target and how??? I know enough that simply going out with a bucket of bait and selection of lures hoping to catch anything isn't a good way to start and will end up in disappointment.
Also like to hear how you generally fish from boats ie what bait, lures etc as all I know is bait from shore but would like to get stuck into soft plastics/ hard lures etc

Tld's are on sale
G'day Kev
I saw tld25 and rod on sale recently at (unfortunately) a large retail chain for $229 I think. An awesome reel suited to many types of fishing - bottom bouncing, live baiting, trolling. I'm sure Ryan and co could do something for you on this set up. You could also put your beach reels to use ( depending on size ) and just buy some rods to suit, especially for shallow water - less than 20m - drifting or burleying at anchor. What sort of beach reels are you running?
Cheers Mick

Thanks for the advice Mick,
Thanks for the advice Mick, unfortunately ive always been into light tackle.
Small daiwa, shimano spinning reels- probably unfit for purpose.
Ill check out some of the larger retail chains- although like you, Id rather support my local tackle shop- Ryan at Oceanside. I think I'll just pay him a visit and sound him out.

All depends on what you want
All depends on what you want to taget mate.
I have about 18 different setups, and still dont think i have enough.
If its dhuies, pinkys your after then a boat rod kit would be best siited. And you can get away with spending only $150 or so for something that would do the trick.
But more than likely you will start off in the river or cockburn sound (This is where i would start) where you can target KG whiting, Squid, Pike, skippy, Sand whiting, Flathead, Herring and tailor.
For these you only need a light spinning kit , and 10-12Lb would do the trick.
Once your comfortable with boat, then you can venture out further to 5 fatham bank, stragglers reef, even rotto on good days. Where your likely to pickup pinkys and dhuies.
Pink snapper are banned and must be returned in the sound at the moment due to breeding season.
I am the same as paul g, your more than welcome to join me for a trip over to rotto one weekend. Got the cray pots in with a mate out thatw ay, and often make the trip in my boat. Leaving from woodman point.
Have not done much fishing out the back of rotto, but i do know they get some great KG's around rotto.
Might need to ask Ryan if he can give me a few pointers on where to look :)

Cheers Bodie, just let me
Cheers Bodie, just let me know when youre heading out and I will join you (provided I'm allowed out to play) Im in Beaconsfield so Woodman point is handy. As I said earlier, my current gear is pretty light but fun when you get something bigger- just takes longer thats all.
My favourite rod is my Shimano Beastmaster S.T.C 2.7m with shinobi 3550 reel. (12lb fireline) Good light rod with plenty action. Would struggle with anything larger.
I also have a Shimano Gold 8'0 rod with Lithium reel (20lb braid) which I use now and then from the rocks for bigger stuff. Pulled plenty large rays with it although hard work. Its a cheap and cheerful setup. I have loads of other lighter setups but those 2 are the ones I generally use.

Main thing is decide what
Main thing is decide what sort of places you would go and just get what you would require for those ares. Basically buy what you need.

Thanks Honsu, but the problem is I don't know where I'll be going as this is all new to me. My first guess will be that I'll probably stick closer in to start like some of the others suggest. Maybe Cockburn Sound, in and around the river until I get my sea legs. I was hoping for a general purpose type combo to get me started. Ive already got the lighter tackle, just need a bit heavier now. I'm going to come see you or Ryan to see what we can sort out.
Cheers mate
