My first boat

 hi all

this is my 2nd post so new to this

i am looking at getting a smallish boat to head out on the river with and maybe something to head out 500m 1km off shore in calm weather.

how big should the boat be and what size motor do you think

see plenty of 3.5-4.6mt alli boats for sale but not sure if that would do the job can some one help please.

 Any half decent leak proof

Wed, 2012-02-29 13:46

Any half decent leak proof dinghy from say 3.6mtr can do this.

Make absolutely sure the outboard is VERY reliable and if at all poossible get yourself a hand held waterproof VHF radio (Less than $300) plus all the nec. safety gear, PDF, flares/rockets, bailing bucket etc.

With my 3.7mtr Doggett and a Tohatsu 18HP outboard I scoot around the coast on a very frequent way all the way sometimes to 3 mile reef if the weather is nice enough.

You do not have to spend a lot of money by buying the dinghy, trailer and the outboard separate if a good deal is offered on an item.

Then you put it all together and sometimes have to licence, trailer and HIN plus registration on dinghy.

Here is my put together outfit in front of Burns beach in a decent breeze going flat out,

wicket fun!

The blue code shown as the link.

Also there is a topic I started on how to deck your dinghy out.

Try to find the actual topic for you as there were some good pics and ideas in it.

if i was you i would be

Wed, 2012-02-29 20:32

if i was you i would be looking at something around the 14 to 16 foot range as this way if you feel you want to go just that bit further out say to the 3 mile or 5 fathom bank you have a slightly bigger boat than a tinny. however the price will be higher and dont get the first boat you see. sometimes the price can be great but the repairs down the track wont be so cheap.good luck finding the right one

the utube vid looks like you where going like the clappers, a good looking rig and having the shift lever extension is a bit of smart thinking

Just be patient

I scored an older model 15ft Dehavilland Offshore runnabout with a  1999 25hp 4stroke big foot merc last winter for $1800 after about 4 months of looking. Had a limit of $3000. The trailer was a bit sad though and unlicensed. It's a bit underpowered but it's cheap as chips to run and it handles a bit of swell no worries.
