Marine radio recomendations

 Hi fishos.

I have been following Fishwrecked Forum for a couple of years, in preparation for my trip over here, and have been here for a little while now and doing final preparations for north West Coast fishing.

Have a  4 metre tinny and 25 hp so will be restricted to close offshore areas.

I would like comments (good and bad) on what marine radio I should consider fitting to ensure safe trips.

We will most likley go as far as Denham initially, and then progress north till it gets too hot.

We have no time constraints, and would appreciate suggestions of where we should not miss.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ross Pankhurst

Firstly try to get a proper vhf marine radio licence, just so you’re legal.

secondly I’d get a fixed mount icom vhf radio and a decent (min 2m)  antenna for max range.

as a backup a satphone is a great idea, or a handheld VHF as well.

If you are planning to travel north do not get a 27meg radio as most sea rescue groups no longer monitor those frequencies.

Any radio that has the 1 metre underwater certification will do because it is going to get wet at some time in a 4 metre boat.

It pays to get a VHF radio op licence but I have never heard of anyone getting pinged for not having one.

When are you coming over? Reason being that if you get to Denham then its not going to get much hotter than there until you get passed Hedland at this time of the year and the fishing gets better the further north you go

Agree with all the above.
Also not known anyone to get find etc for not having a VHF without a licence, but I guess it's coming.
Enjoy your trip in some of the best fishing/camping areas in Oz.

 Thanks team for the comments.

I have a VHF licence from NSW and expect that it is valid in WA.

We are currently near Bunbury, and expect to head north by the end of the month, - as soon as the medical professsion release their grip on me!

If any northern fishos are looking for a deckie in July/August/September, please contact me here.

Regards

Ross

The radio licence is good Australia wide.

Up until August the weatheris good from Kalbarri north then the southerlies start closing boating down but otherwise the highest temp you will get will be mid thirties at best, Exmouth at its best in Sept

.. my GME GX600D  or GX800 hand held.  SUre icom are good...  but are they twice as good as a Standard Horizon as the price difference suggests?

All VHF marine radios sold in AUst will meet Aust standards, I'm positive, but most likely at different values if water resistance/proof.

AS BAcklash said... dont skimp on an aerial....  height above seal level is what gives you the transmission range.
