launching between the capes
Hi everyone
After recently purchassing a boat and hanging up the LB gear for a break I am heading down to margs for the weekend of the 18th and wondering what the options are for launching a 4.75 quintrex. I have been out of dunsborough a few times in other peoples boats and am confident launching that side. I am staying near Gnarabup/prevally is the ramp there ok it looks fairly reefy offshore.. i know there is also 1 at canal rocks maybe this one is better. i am hoping to head out and look for a dhuey or snapper i have not fished that side before and without asking for any spots roughly how far out and depths would i be looking at fishing. From what i have seen to the dunsborough side is good for hezza's whiting squid and general small fry and i would have to head out to cape naturaliste for the bigger stuff. Any info appreciated
cheers rig

gracetown has the best ramp
gracetown has the best ramp in that area .. just stick to the left as you head out and go slow - dont even attempt a night launch. canal rocks has a lot of surge so pic your days there.
plenty of spots in these areas and you only need to travel half mile to find deep water grounds of about 40m .
for herring and squid just hang around in the bay or cast lures onto the breaking reef.

oh yeah forgot about that
oh yeah forgot about that 1, i am quite familiar with that area as i have surfed it a fair bit and have seen the whole bay break on massive swells. I have the mrs as a deckie but she isnt really that inot fishing so some squid would be a great way to kick things off then venture out a bit. cheers feral

Have put a pic of Canal
Have put a pic of Canal Rocks boat tramp up on Fishwecked pics if you want to have a look.
With what you are saying i wouldn't use Gnarabup/Prevally ramp. Difficult at the best of times. More for experienced crew. Gracetown is a good ramp, just be mindful of the weather.
Canal rocks is main one i use on west coast. Bit surgy at times, making it difficult to get boat back on trailer. Steep ramp too. Would be handy having an experienced deckie with you there if it was anything but milpond.
Mostly what i do though is launch from Quidalup or Old Dunsborough ramp and drive around the cape to get to the west. Bit more time distance and fuel, but if the weather turns to poo you can come back arond and fish in the bay. Same if weather is bad but you know it is going to get good hide around the lighthouse and wait, then shoot out. Alot of boats down there seem to do this.
PM me if you want some general directions on where to go out from there.

Don,t have to go to the west
Don,t have to go to the west side to get big fish. Seen plenty of good fish on the four mile while diving the last couple of months.

ramps
if you are central to Margies then the ramp at Gnarabup/Prevally should be OK. i have a 4.6 and never a problem but if you have a 2WD (i have a 4WD) then watch the weed on the ramp and with any ramp south watch the swell surge.
gracetown is easier but very limited space to launch/retreive and dont rope boat to the finger jetty. there are directional markers up on the hill in the gullly to align the channel out through the breakers and just watch the waves and get your timing right.
otherwise augusta has good facilities and deep water off the cape but very weather dependant.
any area between canal and gracetown in 20-40m holds good fish and without giving away gps marks one does need to head far offshore, say 1-3 kms

gracetown jetty
you will see when you have a look.
the swell tends to jam the boat up under the shoulder of the pylons and thus damage the boat for smaller vessels.
all the locals I know who use it have advised agianst it and taking that advise i have never especially when you see it.
there is a little sand beach adjacent to the ramp to rest your boat on the ocean side but last time there the ramp was VERY slippery.
