Kalbarri this morning
Overcast, a bit misty, very light wind from the N, tide from the N, water temp 23.8, clarity looked Ok. Had the lures in the water for all of 3 or 4 minutes, and the centre rod went off, obviously a btter than average fish. My wife had the rod, gave her some curry. Eventually get a nice YFT of a good 18 kg alongside. I wish to release him, go for a tail grab---ambitious---he powers off out of my grip then suddenly the sharks were on him, lost the lot. Then one comes up and bashes the back of the boat and outboard twice.
So we take off for somewhere else, brief troll over one spot for nothing, go further up, see some boats where I was heading, get the lures in well before I get to them, double strike and one is immediately sharked. Stay hooked up on the other, also feels like a largish tuna, fight him for a while then snap off. So I am now down 3 lures for zero return.
So keep trolling and eventually end up with 3 small mackerel, all the size of one shown and a small YFT. Dropped a few, returned a stripie. In at 9.30. Ended up 4 lures down for the morning, worst result ever here for me.

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

Nice
18kg YFT would have been a nice fish. Let's hope the sharks piss off before the Kalbarri Classic.

Kalbarri
And for the shore anglers, the conditions have been perfect. Tailor and whiting every morning and the odd small mulloway occasionally to sweeten the mix. The odd bolt cutter and shark to keep me honest.
We moved up here mid December and it is like living in paradise.
And to top it off, yesterday morning I was fishing off Wittakarra and in the half light I was sure I could see nervous bait fish directly in front of me within casting distance. Sure enough, when the light improved I could see them in and just behind the break with something large harrassing them. Stunned to see a mackerel in the 10 - 12kg range come out of the water.
It won't be long before I get organised with gas and get a balloon out! And my 13 foot tinny will be here in a couple of weeks when my brother gets his finger out.
Ask me if I am glad we bought a home up here. Now when I wake up three good things face me:
1. I am breathing
2. It is Saturday again (everyday for us retirees)
3. I am living here in paradise.

quote 2. It is Saturday again (everyday for us retirees ) unquote
didn't last unfortunately, back to FIFO last 7 months.
Anyway, freezer is full of mackerel and crays, what would I do if I had more time? Can't really see the point in catch n' release crayfishing

nice fish Mrs Ranmar
We were due up there late march early april but with the river down we might delay. has the river dented the mackerel fishing? sometimes it puts them off and other times you can find clean water and fish

I wouldn't worry about the river
Fishing around, and even through, the brown water can be very productive. But it's not much of a river, only spreading on the outgoing tide, and pushing back close to the mouth on the incoming. Other factors such as swell, and dirty and cold water independant of the river, will affect you more. Unless we get another big rain event, there won't be much brown water by yhe end of March. I'mm loking forward to getting home and fishing in it.

Thanks Ranmar 859
0n the last 2 years, (I've been coming up for 30) I started drifting using gars. worked great. If I got a hit trolling or picked up something on the sounder, I would often drive upwind and drift the gar over the spot. They often got hit just as the gar was set out at 20m from the boat....ahhh the scream of the reel.

Not happy to hear
Not good to hear the sharks are becoming such a problem so far down the coast. If they keep migrating south they will end up a real problem for the Perth metro area. There are enough of them down this way already I can't quite remember them being so bad just out the back of G I and on the five fathom. If you look up the shark report site (can't think of it's right name at the moment there is a lot of tigers being pinged between G I and Carnac. Fishing in 40+ metres is quite chancy that you are not going to get a reasonable fish into the boat.
I hope they get lost before the Kalbarri classic or a lot of good fish will be lost.
Time to get the nets out me thinks.

Fmaybe it's the chuck wagon?
the amount of bait around is unbelievable.
last time I went out it was virtually solid bait all the way to Wagoe.
all that food has to bring the munchie brigade in.
i am not a local, so I don't really know if this is normal, last 2 years didn't seem to have the concentrations I saw a few weeks back.

Came over the hill this afternoon
Beautiful blue line with a tide from the north pushing the mud south. Southerly came in later, mud turned around and went north. NE predicted for the morning, I'll be out there, trying out some of the Abrolhos deep divers from Oceanside.
