jiggin last weekend

took the boys out from work jiggin the other day. Had a pretty good day most of the boys hadnt been fishing before so was a bit of an eye opener to them.  You could catch as many skippy as you want biggest went about 6.5 kilo, got about 5 sambos only small, biggest went about 8 kilo and I got a mulloway.  Noticed the sambo's were very high in the water column, never noticed this before maybe about 60 metres of the bottom.  Got smashed once by an unstoppable. Fished the barges in 110m will put up a pic of the skippy soon

Sounds like a good trip. It's not too uncommon for the sambos to sit high in the water column. Looking forward to some pics.

anyone had a chew on those large skippy? they're great when they're smaller but when they're that large are they starting to get pretty tough / strong flavoured?

i actually prefer the bigger ones, got a heap of big ones out at the barges a number of years ago, ate them no worries but hate the smaller ones personally

Just remember to check the flesh. The bigger ones can have worms.

What do we look for , have you got any pics of fish you have caught with worms in them, I catch the big one's all the time but never found any worms in them.

Maybe I have just been real lucky with my fish, most of mine come from out in 170m of water tho.

Not something that would be

Not something that would be in all of them, just that its higher chances with big skippy (and sambos to some extent). They kinda look like little white nodules or lines. Often the flesh around them will be a little more opaque or white (depending on the fish species). Theres a few pictures towards the bottom of the page here.

Unless you're very carefully scruitinising the flesh you might not notice them anyways. If you cook or freeze them it'll kill them and you can eat the fish safely. If you undercook your fish or eat it raw, then probably best to avoid large skippy, or be careful in removing any worms/flesh. I dont think the species are the ones that live in humans but would cause a bit of discomfort perhaps.

interesting

we pulled a few similar looking things out of some reds we got up north earlier on in the year, i'll dig up the pics when i get home from work and put them up. from what i recall they looked similar but without the tail (ie just a big white head... shaped like a maggot).

we only found a few and most were close to the gut.

OHH NOOO

I usually eat the belly flap as sashimi, little bit of Lime juice on to start with , then drain and add Soy with a squirt of Wasabi on the side of the plate, I will keep a big stick next to the bowl incase one of the slices tries to sneek out .

the big skippy are great,r good whole on the bbq.  I head the only way to tell if a fish has the parasite in it is to cook a portion of the fish if it falls apart it has the parasite in it.
