how long to get to mandurah from fremantle by boat
Submitted by redhdc on Sun, 2013-01-20 16:58
Hi guys,
General question, how long would it take to get to Mandurah by boat. From fremantle
A casual, laid back trip, say 15-20knts, just a ball park time as they say rotto is 40mins, surely mandurah isn't all that much further .....

As a crow flies
As a crow flies its 67 km so would expect it to be around 85km by sea and depending on conditions and type of boat etc anywhere between 2. 1/2 and 4 hours

Thx guys, just curious. Still haven't run the engine in. Its a 3.0mpi mercruiser sterndrive on a 70's chivers thunderbird. And no plotter yet. High on the wish list.

Watch out for the reef
Hope you have a paper chart if no plotter. Lots of reef between Freo and Mandurah.

Cheers mate, but I wouldn't
Cheers mate, but I wouldn't be an idiot and do the trip without the proper gear. Having said that that, I didn't know the reef would pose a problem. How shallow is the reef in places ?? Is it visible ???

You havent run the engine yet
You have no plotter (or chart).....I think you should be doing at least one of the above! and book sea rescue to be on standby in the area while your at it (i presume you have a radio and know how to use it) you seem very unprepared "I didnt know the reef would pose a problem" all the "proper gear" in the world wont help you if you dont know how to use it. Maybe plan doing it in company with someone else
more experienced.

Couldn't agree more, I am
Couldn't agree more, I am inexperienced and would not be attempting this on my own for a first time. Yes I have a radio and yes, I know how to use it, but would not contemplate the trip with just a radio as back up. I might not be the sharpest knife in the box but I am certainly not an idiot.
But thx to all for the advise, I'm always open to listening to those with more experience, its one of the best ways to learn.

A chart, parallel rulers and
A chart, parallel rulers and some basic maths is the minimum .There is a shit load of reef at garden island and behind it also. It sounds like you might want to do a basic navigation course at tafe.It is worth the money and it heaps cheaper than a new boat .Lots to learn even experience guys will pick up new stuff at these courses.
