Hopeless fisherman hoping for tips
Hey guys i am new to the forum, this is my first post. I am heading down to Nannup Next week with my girlfriend and daughter, we both like fishing but are useless at it we can never manage to catch much but i have recently spent a bit of money on some new shimano rods and some tackle, im really hoping we can get something on this trip. I know in Nannup the Blackwood is your only real option and you can get redfin perch, bream, and possibly trout in there just wondering if anyone had any advice(rigs, bait, different spots), we will be on foot without a 4x4 with a 8 month old child so i know that makes it a bit more tricky but any info would be greatly appreciated, we are also willing to head to Busselton or Margaret River etc to have a go as like i said we really wanna get something, any ideas guys?

hey mate, I dont know a thing
hey mate, I dont know a thing about river fishing im afraid but I reckon the busselton jetty might be a good option if its not too far away. Should be plenty of herring and gardies around. If you use the search function at the top for herring rigs that should give you the info you need, otherwise any tackle shop should be able to explain herring rigs
welcome to fishwrecked mate and good luck!

Blackwood
Definitely some redfin and trout around the area, and if you are struggling there are some privately stocked dams around. Most luck I have had was on spinner and hard body lures. Most likely too far upriver for black bream around Nannup. At this time of year trout will be holed up in the deep pools as there wont be much fast water. There are spots accessible by normal vehicles. Ask tackle shops to point you in the direction of the right lures. Fish with light line as possible
I have no experience baitfishing for freshwater fish so can't help with rigs or baits. Do believe earthworms or large insects suspended under a small english style float is the regular technique.
Be aware you are required to have a freshwater fishing licence around Nannup so unless you are keen it might be easier to stick to cuthbads plan of the busso jetty.

I was about to mention the licence to
But there are plenty of spots on the river between Nannup and ballingup which are prime country for mostly unfortunately Redfin.
If you are a Novice get a worm farm kit from some store like Bunnings and hook a couple on with a running sinker and you are likely to get lucky with the fins. Just take them home and eat them (or kill them and chuck them back to feed up the Marron).
Just check with a local whether bait fishing is allowed, because some areas are banned from this in the SW.
But hopefully you will get plenty of advise from others because I have been in Karratha for 4 yrs and only use to go fishing down there when we use to have Rallies (Racing not tree huggers) on in that area.

Thanks for the advice
Thanks for that guys that should help me out a lot, im just glad there should be stuff around down there. Im defianatly going to head to the busso jetty it's onyl about half an hour away from where we are staying. I called the fisharies department today to get a licence for fishing in the blackwood in nannup and the guy told me i didnt need one as the blackwood in the nannup area still has salt in the water, should i call again just to be sure or just go on his word?

Mate I would CERTAINLY check again!!!!!
The Blackwood River at Nannup has SALT in it!!!!!! WTF. It would have to seriously swim up stream to even have a dream about that. Certainly down towards Margaret River its the case, but between Nannup and Ballingup you WILL need a licence.
Cheers and please to be off any help.
By the way I forgot to welcome you to the site. Rude bastard I am. Be careful with this site, its more addictive than heroin!!!!

Actually salty upper reaches
Actually salty upper reaches is quite common. What it reflects is the runoff from farms is often pretty bad, and the total amount of water in the system is low. Further downstream, there is more runoff, and from forested areas, so they run less salty.

no licence??
If you dont need one there I dunno where you would need one. Seems crazy to me and I have one when I fish around there. The ruling is to do with tides I believe so should only be able to fish licence free near the river mouth.
Here is the pdf of info

Yeah i agree with you that
Yeah i agree with you that link is the same thing i read before i called them to get the licence, im just gonna call them again and get one anyway. I thought it was a bit weird that he said since it was still saltwater in the blackwood it would be fine.

Tackle/Bait
Hey Jarrad11,
Spent a few years fishing fresh in Victoria so here is some hints i picked up.
Lures for Trout and redfin
Rapala countdowns, RMG scorpions or halco in small size. Trout love the lures in trout colours which is why the Rapala is great. Deeper water use a deeper diver. When casting look for structure including the overhang on the river bank itself (caught a few trout casting along the bank I was standing on). The fish love sitting under submerged logs so put a sinking lure into the flow and let go under the logs and retrieve back. Also fast moving water across shallow rocks, lures must swim properly in the current though so a slow retrieve to keep straight is required.
Bait for Trout and redfin
Use bait you can gather in the area in the form of insects, live yabbies (not Marron) and anything that wriggles and crawls. Little amount of weight as possible or those bubble floats you can control the depth on by filling with water. Some keen people fishing pondage areas used to carry a hypo needle to inject air into bait to keep it floating off the ground (your call bit strange though).
Cant really help with spots here though or Bream (heaps of experts on this site though)
Hope this helps, good luck and post a report when you get back!

2WD spots
If you are willing to travel and as you say only have 2wd, try Hamelin bay down the beach about 200 metres for herring and snook / pike. The road around to the light house at Augusta has a few spots worth a try that are close to the road including the jetty / platform at Dead Finish and over the back of the water wheel at the cape. Dead Finish usually has herring , whiting and skippy and depending on water temps all these spots could toss up an early salmon.
Not sure how bad the track / road in to Boranup is but the walk down to the rock is usually worth it . Tailor, skippy, herring, sharks and a chance of a samson fish .

Sorry Jarrad
The licence thing already mentioned. Another good spot but a wee hike is Cosy Corner. Depends on the age of the kid but you can fish of a nice platform there, but be bloody careful about the swell, especially if Diane heads down there. Otherwise the beack at Cosy is also productive and you may even see cruising salmon there this time off the year. Have a rod with a laser or other metal ready in a holder and when you see a "bunch of weed" that looks black move hoink the thing in that direction.
If you Burley up IMO close to the rocks (when you get there youl know) you will get all sorts, and I have caught herring, a Tailor (that was a surprise), heaps of skippy, whiting in dead close (within 3-5m from the waters edge), Tarwine, Flatties etc from that area. I have even caught a few Black Bream.
We use to go to the platform when we had no kids, and the beach with kids. The beach is much safer but it is a steepish walk, but nothing that a fisho would blink at.

No luck
Hi guys sorry for the delay, was a nice trip but no real luck with the fishing didnt go in nannup because the water levels were really low and was not much around so we went to the busso jetty and caught some trumpeters but that was all.
Hopefully we have better luck next time!
Cheers
