My current units came with the boat, basically useless. Would be nice to get 2 in 1 to save a little space. Anyone with any experience with these Garmin 420s units?

Goooooone Fishin!

I've used plenty of combos

I've used plenty of combos and would never get one of my own. You're always on the wrong screen, menu's are a pain and the screen size is nothing flash. Unfortunalty $900 won't get you much in the way of 2 seperate units. Even $900 combo's are pretty average, you'll wish you spent more after a few weeks of using it.
I've used a Garmin combo a lot lately and hate it, I'll get the model number and post it up. The plotter side is ok at a pinch but the sounder is lousy.
Keep your eye on forum pages, individual units often come up for sale.

Rodrat, were on about the small piss ant half screen you have to find fish on a lump on one side, while trying to see your mark on the other half of screen..if the screens were twice the size..combos would be selling like hotcakes!

Save your money a while

Save your money a while longer and get yourself a furuno FCV-620 (or 585 for abit more cost) and then run what ever chart plotter you want. I cant stand combo units.

As already mentioned their charts are great but lack on the sounder side of things.

Just my opinion...

Combo

If you have trouble with a combo you lose the ability to go fishing. If you have separate sounder /gps,if you lose one you can still go fishing with the otherwhile the broken one is being fixed/replaced.When you have a small lump you can zoom right in to get as close as posible with the gps while still showing bottom lock with full depth on the other unit.
Couple of mates have had combos and went and got either the sounder or gps so it could be used for one purpose

Lowrance LCX27

Hey Burkie,

I went the combo way also due to a shortage of dash space. I got a Lowrance LCX27C. Both plotter and sounder work well and you can always upgrade the sounder with a Broadband unit when you get cashed up again. Once you identify which screens you use most, changing between them is simple. I brought the unit off the net for $1400 delivered to my door.
