Evinrude 115 FICHTS

Any info on these motors? picking up new boat tomoz. Baron Outrider fitted with this model, think its 2006 or05. Yunderup Marine are doing the deal and have all confidence with them (highly recommend Kevin Phillips and the team) just hoped some crew might have experience with this engine, appreciate any comments or ideas/tips. Thanks

they are coming off a 26ft Leisure Cat and have done 420hrs with the owner upgrading to four stroke (no shortage of cash) and look very sound. Yeah did google thing awhile back and most horror stories linked to the bigger HP's, have you owned one? know someone who has?

Not sure how many Luckyboy

Mon, 2011-01-24 18:48

Not sure how many Luckyboy has owned but as long as it has had services and upgrades if should prove to be just as reliable as any other second hand outboard.

If it was going to 'blow up' it would have more than likely done it earlier in life. Most of the problems were with the early models. By 05 they had most issues well and truely worked out. The Ficht Ram version was virtually identical to the first Etecs.

One thing to keep in mind was that the stigma attched to them means most will shy away and resale value with a Ficht will reflect that. Good bargaining tool for a buyer but its an unfortunate reality for a seller.

They do chew spark plugs around every 80 hours. Will notice it running a bit 'off'. Pricey in Aus but parts are easy to find and cheap out of the USA.

Hope that helps.

If you get stuck for parts

If you get stuck for parts let me know. There are a couple of great sites that actually offer reasonable postage.

I think Paul G had one, perhaps the computer went and it was going to cost $3k on its own to replace?

matemy uncle(freofish04) has

Mon, 2011-01-24 19:31

mate

my uncle(freofish04) has a 200ficht on his boat and it goes like the clappers, never had any issues with it yet, has done 200odd hrs now.

i have the 200 etec, 120hrs,couple of minor probs that brp fixed imediatly with no cost to me at all.

i belive that brp's warranty is one of the best around.

i also belive that every motor can have problems, its just weather you get a bad one or not.

my 200 2stroke yammy blew up at 350hrs after having a full insepction before we brought it and was meant to be a perfect engine.....just dont figure!

we searched around for months before buying our etec and there are bad/good reports on every engine on the market, just depends who you ask?

the mercs seem to have the most bad comments/problems in the 2 strokes.

for us it had to be 2stroke so it narrowed things down alot....etec or another yammy.

good luck

ron

 thanks Ron, you're right

thanks Ron, you're right about motors, we've mostly had Johnno's and rudes and the worst to happen was the need for a rebuild on the johhno after 700hrs of serious use! since rebuild no issues although we've been gentle hence the new purchase (boat and motor) thanks for the help

spark plugs

Mon, 2011-01-24 20:59

i had a 200 ficht and a 115 ficht no problems with them both , the only issue was the i got water through the fuel on a trip and the 115 played up no end, i got new plugs but was then told that they actually have to align with marks on the block to ensure the ignitor is in the correct position which may take several plugs as once their tight you cannot spin the plug around to suit the correct position

I had the 175hp computer went

Mon, 2011-01-24 21:49

I had the 175hp computer went and was going to cost $5000 with no guarantee it wouldn't go again. So I went to a Honda 4 struck. I will say I had no problem with the motor for six months never missed a beat. Then I got it service for Exmouth and that was that .never went well after that .I am sure they stuffed it and would put money on it .but how you prove it. go's in running great comes out running up the shit .took it back twice ,all they would say was its just one of those things,

that's scary

Mon, 2011-01-24 22:52

must say never had that issue with any of my marine motors (cars on the other hand..), but I've not had one with a computer attached! the main service dude at Yunderup Marine did his time on Evinrude's and all my mates have had good service from them. Thanks for the heads up Paul.

150 ficht

Tue, 2011-01-25 08:29

Ive got the 2000 model 150 ficht  on my 5.5m savage defender . Its done 300+ hours and runs really well , fozz will vouch for that . Sometimes when its cold takes a few turns of the key to start but other than that havnt had any dramas yet. When i got it serviced at chivers(good service but pretty pricey) they said the same if there was going to be any problems it would have happened by now.

Cheers   Gaz

115 fichts Horror story

Tue, 2011-01-25 12:21

I had the exact same motor on new boat. Had only done 90 hours. Well it only did about 5 hours more and totally blew the head, rings, pistons some 16 miles out to sea. Called sea rescue to be towed in. Absolute crap motor and no power heads available in Australia so I recon parts would be rare to.

The only good thing was Evinrude came to the party with an exchange motor offer because the Ficht did have a warranty.

BRP or Evinrude OK service but Fichts were a disaster for them.
