had a 150 and it was thristy to some,1.2 ltrs to n/m,but all things concidered it was on a heavy glass boat (1150kgs hull weight) with a deep V and l flogged it, but it still jumped on the plane and hit 38 knots lightly loaded.
The 225 is a beast.l wish l went down that path from the begining.
we only have the 150 on hours - 6.5m ally, but it is a brilliant engine - we get around 1.6km/l out of it, yes it does use a bit of oil - as all 2 strokes do, but definately a lot less than when we had the glass 5.8m with a merc efi......

From Hillarys bumped through a 15 knot easterly to the northern fad, trolled all the fads to the bottom and smashed our way back through a southerly at over 25 knots and just hit 100 liters used. Amazing mid range. 3500 revs uses 18 ltrs per hour with the Stabi
Alfred . . . 1.4 km/litre average from a 300 suzuki on a 2140 kilo dry hull , more like 2700 kilos with fuel, water, ice, gear people etc. Go a Suzuki mate, you wont regret it. .
The intention is to have it on a a 6.3m, 1800 kg dry weight, glass hull. Problem is, The transom was originally designed for a lighter 2 stroke. Original weight of the 200HP on it now is only 458lbs and most of the new 4 strokes are in the 560-600lb range, they will fit and the transom can handle it, but if everyone is in the back, together with a full ice box, I am afraid the deck might get wet.
got a mate with a 200ho on the back of his 6.5koolyn not sure of fuel but he says much better than the 200 4st yammie he had previously and much quicker with heaps more low end torque whick i think is very important best thing for you do is talk to the dealers that sell more than 1 brand of motor (especially the ones that sell 4 st only)and get there opinions and what they have on there own boats big heavy gutless slugs them 4st
You've gotta be kidding mate. can't say anything for the bigger motors but I've got a Suzi 90 4st and it's got as much poke as my old 2st Evinrude. Pretty ill informed response.
i know your related to a yamaha only dealer so your prob just a wee bit biased but as this is a free thread to voice your opinion to a question someone has asked well you got mine and yes i do have just a wee bit of experience with outboard motors . havent seemed to of named anyone or is it only dealers that have lost there dealership that you are talking about
i spoke with a well known dealer in Perth when i collected my Polycraft and he said 150hp is the magic number, anything less, go the Etec as the weight savings are worth it and sometimes those little boats need that low down grunt. Aboce that and it's 4 stroke all the way as the size (displacement) of the motor gives that torque you require.
when i priced up motors on the polycraft the etec was 30kg lighter and the price was cheaper than a 4 stroke from suzuki and yamaha so unless they've chnaged thier pricing in the last few years this was one of the reasons i went the etec
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe both Etec and Suzi have 5 year warranties now...which means for 5 years you have to take the motor into an authorised mechanic for servicing. For Etec, that's one service. For Suzuki, that's SIX services. My Etec is a 90hp and has done 450 hours in less than 3.5 years...I've taken it in once for servicing, which cost me around $550 and included plugs, impeller, and thermostat. There were no dramas with seized bolts/corrosion or any of the other horror stories that some on here have entertained us with in past threads. Sure, being a 2-stroke means it consumes oil, and the oil ain't cheap (try $75/gallon!) but in the lower HP range it uses something like a third as much as the older 2's so cost there is still bugger all.
Can't really speak for the larger size motors...maybe it's better for you to beef up the transom, Alfred, and go the 4 st, but from my experience, the Etec is as good as any, if not better, when you're looking at the smaller ones.
I have a 90 etec, and can reliably tell you it has a lot more midrange punch than the 90 four strokes I have been in. Anyone who has had both 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors will agree with this. Compare a 2 stroke victor lawnmower with a 4 stroke Honda in long grass.....chalk and cheese. I would go etec at 150 hp or less, based on weight (although etec is not always lighter in every hp class), low down torque and 3 yr service.
At 225, I would go 4 stroke though. Fuel and oil saving at this size justify the extra service costs and such large motors have reasonable torque anyhow.
can anyone confirm the 3 year service applies, and you are covered by warrenty, if you use it in saltwater? Have read lots that that only applies to freshwater use? not really worried as just switched from mercs (never had a problem) to 140 Suzi 4st and love it.
Went fishing on saturday....my Etec burnt through 4 litres of oil at $65 a bottle....on top of $200 worth of fuel.
Engine set properly for oil burn ratio etc.
Had a computer blow up on me which I had to fight Evinrude over...they wanted to charge me $8000 to replace..had to threaten them with online terrorism to get it replaced.
DO NOT BUY ETEC!!!!!
Would never own one again.
ETEC buyers are divided...Suzuki buyers are united..they all love their engines.
What I have been told about Etecs is they run with pretty much no oil. ie To pass there claims on emissions they needed to bring oil ratio down to 400:1 mix. Therefore, the parts in them are extremely cutting edge in terms of materails to counter the low oil ratio. However, Wazo said he used 4 litres for $200 (150L) of fuel so it looks like the ratio is 38:1 which doesn't sound right for an etec.
I have a four stoke yammi at the moment, and I would stick to 4 strokes at the moment as you just can't beat them for realiability.

IIRC Simon C had a 150hp on his boat before he replaced it with the 200hp yammy 4st, maybe ask him how they compared on the stabi?
I have to admit I probably wouldn't buy 200hp etec, I don't mind them, I just think that size is 4st territory.

Etec?
without knocking the etec, can anyone tell me why someone would choose one?
They arent cheaper (check Suzi 140 v Etec 130) or lighter (same), or more economical.
They should be both cheaper and lighter, and may be in some size ranges, but not overwhelmingly?
And at the end of the day, whether they are better or not the resale doesnt match a 4 stroke either?
same question for a Verado I guess?
