Engine Trim
Submitted by JoRn on Wed, 2009-02-04 21:05
hi all,
Before my holiday i took my boat out and the trim switch on the control box was no longer working.
The trim switch is still working on the engine.
Do you think i have to change the whole control box? or is there a simple tilt replacement or change the wiring?
last question - do you guys unplug your battery when the boat is not in use? my dads boat got a simple switch that shuts down the power...is it worthwhile investing in one of these?
whats the worst thing that could happen if i dont unplug it

Wiring
Sounds like a wiring issue if the trim/tilt is still working on the motor.
Battery isolator will help prevent electrolysis occurring if you have an ali hull and something is earthed to it i.e. metal 12 volt cigarette lighter socket.

Its common for the switch to fail itself. Open it up and I can bet you its a bit green inside. Should be a replacable part.

Yep, change the switch, they fail regularely.
You can test the switch, arc a screwdriver across the two terminals with the wiring obviously still connected and see if the trim works, if it does its not the wiring but the switch.

Battery Islolator.
Good idea. I know with the sounder/GPS combo that I have, there is still a power draw even when it's switched off. Had a lot of trouble with batteries being drained before I put in a switch. Could be the difference between a great day on the water or being towed in.

Isolators
are apparently not foolproof. I was talking to a boat builder/repairer this week and he has had 2 boats in his workshop recently where he could detect voltage down line of the isolator and get cables to arc. Battery disconnection when not in use is his motto.
