Coral Bay trip last week
Had a week up at Coral bay with the Missus last week and managed to get out on my yak twice in the afternoons when the wind eased off out off Mauds Landing.
Scored this nice 60cm (approx) Spangled Emperor on an Abrolhos paddletail softy and it slammed the lure hard on the drop in fairly shallow water. I thought I had done enough initially to bullock it away from the bottom, but it somehow managed to get there and snag me up for a while until some gentle pressure got it loose. Lucked out on the second day I fished, with only a couple of good strikes, plus i had to head back in and get everything packed up for the drive back home the next day, so couldn't stay on the water into the late afternoon when the Spanglies were coming on the bite.
Was a good break away from it all anyway and I did meet one fellow Fishwrecked crew member (whose username escapes me right now) who had been getting plagued by sharks out in the boat.

We anchor and fish the sand on the edge of the reefs late afternoon. Great fight in shallow as they will head straight for the reef

When I lived in Exmouth we
When I lived in Exmouth we went nth from Tantabiddy inside the reef - cant remember how far but was a fair way -
no GPS in those days - watching for bommies. Find a sandy patch amongst the broken bottom type country
and get as close to the reef as safely possible and always watching the water coming over the reef chuck the anchor out
and let out enough rope for safety sake and also enable casting into the sandy area. We used old broken up defrosted mulies
as burley and occy on 3x6/0 ganged limerick hook rigs with approx 18 inch 100l b nylon trace,no sinker but bait casting
the swivels must be tarnished to ensure that any sharp toothed critters like bloody long toms did not bite the rig off.
Once they got the burley smell they would go crazy and sometimes GTs and cod were attracted into the action.
Back then we were allowed 10 each and as the mate had a friend visiting we got our full bag. By the time we got home and
processed the catch and that included the wings we were all pissed, tired and very happy. My boat was an old 16ft quintrex
with a 50 Evinrude Lark on the back which some of the now old farts may remember
As a side issue I was told to use prawns that had been in the sun and on the verge of going off as bait for blue bone
as they cant resist the taste.

Preference
My preference is to drift through the same kinds of area flicking 1/2oz Bucktail jigs. If things are quiet I'll anchor and try and get a light berley trail going into the reef, again flicking bucktails. Great sportfish on the right gear. I prefer a bit of chop on the water so its good to do when its blowy.
When it goes off you can while away many an hour.

Just had some for dinner and it was very tasty
I do think it is better to eat fresh, but still comes up good after being frozen.
