Cheap outboards

Hi Guys,

I need some advice. l've given up trying to get a second hand outboard so i am going to just buy a new outboard. Looking for a 3.5hp one, anyone know where i can purchase a cheap new one with a place that has good aftersales service?

In particular are there any particular brands i should avoid?

 Cheers,

Hi Paul,

Tried the oars, they are not handy in the open ocean. I need something with a bit more oomph to get me safely back to shore.

Can you give us a idea of the size and make of the boat that you putting the donk onto. How many will be in the boat that needs to get you safely back to shore?

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say i bought a brand new mercury 3.5hp motor. Its actually an auxillary for my 12ft tinny. Unfortunately now i gotta figure out how to mount it since i simply cannot squeeze both on my tinny the transom is too small and it turns out the 3.5hp head block of the motor is pretty big and i already got a 15hp installed.

Maybe i need to drill  and fix an auxillary bracket?

 Cheers,

Kackles.

auxillay for a 12 footer!!

Ok.. generally oars should give you peace of mind unless you've only got one armSmile. Send a photo through if you get it done.

My father and i rowed from the main reef in cervantes to shore. I think it was something like 5 nautical miles. Not fun

haha yeah i tried rowing, was struggling in the marina with all that gear, tinny felt like it weighed a ton, could barely move in the marina.

100% lost cause in the ocean i rekon. Now for that bracket...hmmm anyone got an auxillary bracket for sale?

I reckon the weight penalty

in a small tinny would negate any benifit derived? Aside from storage issues in what you are already describing as a cramped dinghy.

Kind of puzzled why anyone would bother with an aux on dinghy, just get a reliable primary.

well, safety! I wouldn't dare to go out to the ocean with just one motor. Besides, the aux only weighs 12kg so it wouldn't skewer the weight distribution so much.

It sounds like you have spent the $$$.

I respect your opinion. But I think that will change over time. Make a donation to a sea rescue group in your area and you will find that they will tow you in for free if you break down or require their assistance. Well that’s how mine has worked for years anyway and I’m sure VN6DI is the same.

Hi Garry,

Having a auxillary means i can launch from dynamic locations. The added benefit is also you can sell it and you retain a certain measure of control rather than relying on someone else, eg the sea rescue.

i think sea rescue should only be used as a last resort as opposed to an RAC service :) hehehe

Oh i forgot to say i don't have a maritime radio either, so calling up searescue wouldn't even be feasible!

Cheers,

Steven

12 ft dingy with 2 POB and a little bit of a breeze, you will be going backwards, just a passenger going for a ride. Experience and time will help you along with decision making. First comes the lesson then the learning.

Radio

IMO you would be better off spending the money on a radio, preferably VHF, instead of the spare motor.Go back 10-15 years and every second boat had a spare motor on the back and have a look now and you won't see any, says enough doesn't it.

VHF Hand Held Radio's

Fri, 2009-10-23 08:44

I just had a 5 watt hand held VHF in my Tinny, just made sure I had it onboard when I ventured out wide. Picked it up off Ebay  $130  and it seemed a pretty good brand (Uniden). Motorola make the good ones though for here on the Drillship, they get a pretty hard time from the crew

Money better spent on a 27Mhz (I think VHF is overkill for a tinny that has to stay within 5nm of land) than an auxillary motor.

And saying "its only 12kg" is a furfee champ - given an average 15hp 2 stroke is arond 35kg, thats a 33% increase in weight on the transom (putting it up into 25/30hp territory and thats before you add a bracket) which may be beyond its rating? Might be something to check .

condition of the main motor = dodgy!!

In fact today i had to pull it like 20 times to get it started. But once it starts its cool. In fact it has become progressively harder to start it since i got it and i only bought it 2 weeks ago.

This time round despite alot of coaxing, unfortunately when i wanted to flush it when i got back it just didn't even start =[

Its a 1990 Evinrude 15hp. Its so hard to start.... any one have any clue why it just doesn't start anymore.

-Checked fuel pump was working and hard.

- Spark plugs are brand new, just changed.

Thank god for the backup today, got me back in one piece :)

If you don't trust your primary, you just shouldn't go.

Hmm that gets back to my earlier point, who needs an aux when you have a reliable primary, especially when you're never more than a couple of miles out.

Its a lot of work to go and needless if you have a reliable primary.

$$$$$$$, sorry student here so can't afford a reliable primary, since a reliable primary = $2000 >. Can't afford a service at the moment either.

This old evinrude cost me $550 but is ultra dodgy.  New to boating so probably i got ripped off =[

i started off with a $850 dollar tinny boat and trailer setup and am now up to $3000 total spent on the boat so i cannot afford anymore.

Anyone know how much the service might cost and where to go so i won't get charged an arm and a leg?

Finding a trustworthy mechanic i rekon is like finding a needle in a hurricane that just went through that haystack. :)

Theres alot of combined years experience trying to help you mate

Sat, 2009-10-24 01:46

Im glad you have managed to come up with a temporary solution to your problem, can i suggest though if you are a keen and avid boaty / fisherman take the time to save the required money to get a decent outboard for your primary as soon as you can.

Maybe the reason the primary is hard to start is its simply flogged out. Its nearly 20 years old, you say youve changed the spark plugs and checked the fuel, might be worth checking compression to see if its simply lived as long as it is going to? its definately not worth going down the track of replacing piston rings etc at this age of its life.

Kackles we have found owning

Sat, 2009-10-24 07:36

Kackles we have found owning a boat is a costly excersise.  With the purchase price plus refit and kit out our Bluebone has been an ongoing expense which we happily pay for all of the good times we have had and hopefully will continue to have.  This is the choice that we have made instead of overseas holidays and fancy cars etc.

I am not having a go at you but owning any kind of boat is going to cost lots of money.  There are no real ways of making short cuts with running a boat especially with saftey.  It is not like a car when you break down you just start walking.

Years ago with an earlier boat we were ripped off too with an old motor.  We were gutted and a bit red faced but managed to eventually sort another motor that actually did go.  It is all learning and chatting to people on here is a good start as Kane said there is a lot of combined experience on here and we are learning things all the time too. Smile

I doubt it can a compression issue since it runs at WOT fine and is pretty speedy and not losing power.

I suspect its something to do with the ignition system. Cause once it goes, it flies and runs fine, though once it suddenly just died midway during operation but most of the time eg 90% it works fine once it starts running.

Now l'm aware that a boat is not cheap and is a serious liability on the balance sheet but i think personally a tinny doesn't cost much, the only thing that really costs money i think is the motor, since the tinny hull, there is nothing much to maintain as long as no dings or scrapes occur.

haha well said David, i rekon its all fun and games till the reliable primary engine dies and the battery's dead and no one is around to assist :)

henceforth my dual backups - my aux motor AND my oars for worst case scenarios. So save for a swamping in which case l'm screwed anyways, i will never not be able to get back to shore.
