Chart Software?

Heyoop Guys and Girls,

I'm looking for some chart software that I can run on my PC (XP OS). Any ideas? It's for the south coast of WA.

Suprised I haven't a response on this. I would have thought quite a few would have chart software on their PC.

Charts

Would then have to be purchased seperately, or scanned in and calibrated....

Or you may be able to find them on some of the file sharing networks....

some chart/software

Mon, 2009-01-12 15:58

There are a couple of things you can do to check out spots from home, and also to upload them to your GPS once you've found them...

C-maps is pretty unreal - you can get charts/soundings etc for the whole globe, right there at home, and they use the most up-to-date info too. The website isnt really good, but you could call the distributor. I think it may be pretty exy though, because it is for mostly commercial applications...but i havent bought it so i dont know...I've seen it and it is really really cool!

http://www.c-map.com.au/

alternatively you could go for OziExplorer http://www.oziexplorer.com/ and buy the scanned charts from the Navy to use in it. you can get (in)accuracy issues with these charts though cos i think they are just high-resolution scans of the paper charts and so arent georeferenced properly.

or do it the old-fashioned way with paper charts!! they look great as a wall hanging when youre not using them too!!! nothing like poring over a beautiful chart with a ruler and compass!!!

Cheers,
Ewan

wreck up and down the coast that is on record.  He also loves getting the chart out with his GPS (black book) spots and seeing exactly where he has been and sometimes one spot has about six hits on it within a few metres here or there.

Now THATS the response I have come to love from this site. Absolutely fantastic all - brilliantly done!

Cool

Cheers Pete and Ewan

Many thanks Feral and other Wink - PMs responded to.

Yup Buz, nautical charts mate.

Karl - I'm not aiming at connectivity between my PC and my plotter - just want software on the PC to consider trip options etc.

Again ALL - thanks again. This is what makes Fishwrecked such an awesome site! Great people, always willing to help.

Garmin Bluechart CD

Mon, 2009-01-12 16:31

The Garmin Blue Chart CD is the go guys. Also serves as a waypoint manager which is very handy. It's a bit of a pain to install, you'll need to register the product with Garmin and obtain a password to unlock the software, but it's well worth it. RRP of $249 which covers and area from Esperance right through the north of WA and around to the Coral Sea in Queensland. You can measure distances between points of interest, place the cursor over any point and it will give you the GPS co ordinate. All very handy stuff.

Thu, 2009-01-15 23:05

Navionics have their own software and card reader Harro, perhaps check their website to get the name. There is also a 3rd party product that some prefer over it, but buggered if I can remember what its called.

I have Garmin on my computer, got it off a friend and I use it to check out new locations before I go there. I can tell you it is very accurate.

It is also brilliant for pre plotting your course and working out how many km's/N-miles you might do before even hitting the water. To me thats a security bonus in its self when it comes to gaging fuel usage etc.

Weather looks good for tomorrow. We'll be heading out early (to be beat the Oz weekend Albany blowin'cluster').

I've been given a RED HOT tip for 1m pinkies Tongue out. Worked it out to the recommended depth - so much easier with chart software on the 'puter.
