Cervantes PB 19kg dhufish on jig!
With the last trip to Cervantes being a winner I had to get back up again for another crack at it!
There was a small gap last week with one day being ideal and the next day not so. The forecaster's were spot on with the weather and fishing being good the first day one and well the early seabreeze cut short the second day!
My staff member Reese came up and so did good mate Scott. So first day, magic conditions and I did another few hours of recon. Racking up new spots is a buzz when it happens and that morning far & few between!
So I step out deeper and fished a few old spots and straight into dhufish on jigs. We struggled to get away from dhufish which is a good problem (like last time) so I headed a bit deeper to see if I could find a breaksea/baldy etc
I had no spots in that deeper stuff so did some driving around, located a nice deep water lump and down went the jigs. We all hooked up again and my rod fully loaded up to something very solid!
I said to Reese a big dhu me thinks and after a good fight up popped a quality dhu. I said to the boys its a bit smaller than my last one last trip and guessed it at around 17kg. Back at the filleting station I weighed it and I was pleasantly surprised it was actually a bit bigger than my last one!
End result it's now my PB on jig at 19kg (weighed on digital scales). The standout jig including what the big dhu ate was the Lamble Kanpachi 2 jig in 135g & 165g. Our favourite assits's are the Jigging Sports Australia brand and the model used was the " Lazer " in the new 4/0 hook size!
Thanks boys for your company, cheers Jimmy and Casey for lending me your house again - Thanks

How to increase the fishing
How to increase the fishing pressure on an area in one post.
Catching fish a out of Two Rocks used to be easy then word got around it became hard, so let's move up Cervantes and tell the world about it.
For those who think the Dhuie population is alive and well. Think again it is on the brink and areas can sustain certain amount of fishing pressure. No real need to say where they were caugt in my opinion.
Here's hoping you sell heaps of jigs

Shit Rant
Really Champ. Not necessary is probably a nice way to put it.
Oceanside is a long-term site sponsor and surely there isn't a problem with catching fish on jigs and informing the public about which ones worked on the day. It's called advertising and helps an independant shop owner make a living.
Negative posts have no place here. And before you come back with 'Hey I'm not being negative, I'm telling you how it is' let me just say 'it's negative' mate. Take it someplace else.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

If that's the case. Why are pros allowed from 2 rocks to Jurien?? Drop lines and nets. Was at Cervantes few weeks back. ( last time Ryan was there)Seen net fisherman putting net out for kilometres?? On the second bank? Good point of view but surely if you can net in area stocks can't be that bad?. I may go that way once a year sometimes twice a year. Great place. Never an issue with fish. I also no people who go there and catch nothing. Can't see problem with fish post. It's not a secret place. Also brings good trade to small crayfishing town. Best thing is jetty at night. Herring squid and tailor. Got me. ???? Fishing clubs hold comps there.( weekend comps) Marmion fishing club 1 I know off. ( no not in any club). ? Thing is in any area you still need to know how to fish and use your electronics. Not having dig at all . So don't snap. Just point of view . Brings good income to the small fish town:):):)

I guess we all now know where Gunner966 fishes out of!! Thinking of getting a few boats together and doing a Cervantes weekend - after a quick trip to Oceanside to top up on tackle of course.

Well done Ryan and crew. No
Well done Ryan and crew. No better way to endorse a product then with proven results. Livin the dream i say. And Gunner im gonna be heading to cervanties now and im gonna flog the absolute shit outta it! So i can bring one fish home coz thats the law for me off a kayak and it will be of legal size because these measures have been put in place to conserve fish stocks, and my wife and i are going to enjoy a meal that didnt cost us the world per kilo. Bans and size/bag limits are put in place for a reason and people abite by them.

Lol nice post Gunner. No one come to Exxy, it has good fishing. Hang on, dont come to albany it has good fishing. Wait wait, mandurah has good fishing if you know where to go. But wait, what about Carnarvon, it has good fishing too. What, you say you can still catch good fish around Rotto. Lets check a few of our local posts like Johnny and Andy, wait, what a revelation theres good fish to be caught metro too...

Wow What a response I have
Wow
What a response
I have re read my post and I can see how it was could have been perceived in the wrong context so for that I apologise.
However just want to put a few things on the record.
I firmly believe everyone is entitled to their opinion and shouldn't be belittled for that. So on this point I won't respond to personal attacks by attacking other people.
So for the record
• Like a lot people I have fished for over 30 years for Dhufish and caught more than my fair my share biggest going 23.32kg on Certified scales and firmly believe we have seen best of that fishery. Technology has certainly played its part. (Sounders, outboard reliability of course GPS's).
• I have had 2 sit down interview with Dr Mike Mackie over large Dhufish schools I have found, one school had excess of 200 fish in it. The GPS co-ords were given so hydrophonic recorders can be placed there for further research.
• Mortality rate on Dhufish even using a release weight is over %50 with larger specimens much lower than this.
• The whole point of my rant was around the additional fishing pressure that can be placed on a relatively small area, by consistantly naming the location while displaying excellent catches on a public forum. I always used struggle with the rational of Mandurah Offshore Fishing Club massive prize money Comps, for me this added an additional one to two months fishing pressure in one single day. Cervantes for example is small in comparision to areas that were once rich in Dhufish like Mandurah and Two Rocks - if you were to drew a line due West of Grey out 14 mile (100mtr line) and then North to Jurien and back in is less than one third of the area of Mandurah's 40mtr -50mtr area.
I still believe that the Dhufish stocks are at the brink - people will respond with there are so many small Dhuies around. Those people in the know - will know that about 6 years ago along with the Crayfish there was unprecedented recruitment of Dhuies, that is what we are seeing today. However the larger breeders (double digit Dhuies) are not in the same number they were 5 years ago.
I'm not saying don't put photo's of catches as I enjoy them as much as you, I'm just ask thinl about naming the location
Once again apologies to anyone I offended, as this wasn't my intention
over and out

Well measured
Hey Gunner a well written response in the face of some pretty substantial criticism.
Good to see it hasn't turned into a complete shit slinging session as a few contentious posts in the past have.
Not saying I agree either way, just a measured sain response.

gunner I get where your coming from ,
nice to read thought out responses in this thread
while I think ryan hasn't given up any secret info here and he has done well , [good on him ]
I know from experience blokes don't like a very different perspective being raised about their feel good fishing posts & habits
my pet hate where I agree with your point totally is the amount of fishers who catch and release dhuies , even after they have got a limit etc ,
there is a fashionable kind of nod and wink thats its ok as they do survive release even in really unknown numbers , so everyone who releases a dhuie thinks theirs will survive , cause they handled it well etc etc
truth is most probly don't survive , they die as the average released fish is handled less than at the optimum ,
I like to see more fishers think about this when there out there ,, move off the demersals once you have your 2 dhuies and target something else and maybe it will improve with education etc

Lol
Never thought it was support comp. thought was fishing site.I must have it wrong. Hezzy sometimes you can move of ground where dhues are and swap all gear to kg rigs. Guess what still get cat 1 fish. By the sounds of it your against fisheries tag and release programs? Good for goose good for gander. Sometimes can not be helped.( catch and release). Maybe rules should be changed.4 dhues a boat . 2 fishers 4 cat 1 fish.6 fishers 6 cat 1 fish( boat limit 4 dhues) that will stop them getting released . Just A thought:);)

So we go and target Baldies,
So we go and target Baldies, pinkies, Blackarse etc after catching our two Dhuies but the method and rig is generally the same. I think you're dreaming if you think fishos will stop fishing after catching two Dhuies when they know they can still catch quality fish within their bag limit. Gee we try and do the right thing by release and still get shot down for it.

this is what i wrote ,
id like to hope that the serious fishers who are out on the water regularly , who can catch a fish regularly will think it over and consider it when there demersal fishing ,getting a full bag limit of demersals every time might not remain such a key criteria to having a good day for many fishers
most blokes try to do the right thing , no issues with that , releasing dhuis is what we are required to do , over time people may become better at it ,
of course as johnny says you will still sometimes catch dhuies , even when you down size ,
key point i wanted to make was for the crews that continue targetting demersals , and continue catching dhuies just to release them and test jiggs or whatever and think there ok as some will survive , just think about moving on to something else totally
johnny , fisheries need to do research , having been out with them there staff do the best they can with the resources they have to ensure good survival rates
catch and release is ok for some species jmo that dhuies need to be on a different level

Well we are governed by the laws that be and fish according to the rules. I don't think you will ever out fish a fish stock with rods and reel. You can thank the commercial sector for the decline in any stock but then again we need a commercial fishery and am as you can see totally against the reintroduction of fish traps up north, I'd tip my hat if you jumped up and down about that issue. I stiil don't agree with your Dhuie comments unless you are out there physically monitering and counting the stocks which is just about impossible to do even for the experts. Hell, they still don't even really know where they go to breed.

Dhuie stocks
I fish out of Busselton and I think the Dhuie stocks are currently the best I've seen in decades.
Dhuie catches on my boat generally out number my catches for all other demersal species combined. It's not too often I return with my demersal bag limit, yet very rare I don't return with our Dhuie boat limit.
This includes fishing spots we have fished since the 80's.
I've also fished Jurien Bay in the last 12 months and found that similar with sized Dhufish also caught there in less than 15m of water.
BTW: Ryan, your posts are always much appreciated by me. Always a much valued read. Ta.

fishermans secrets
I think most of the noise on this subject is sticking up for Ryan. Nothing wrong with sticking up for someone who is passionate and helpful to all fishers in the metro area.
But as a fisher who lives remote, i tell no one jack shit, because i have been burnt too many times. If you metro mob think it is ok to tell the world where they are going well good for you ! At some stage our so called secret spots do get found, but as far as i am concerned let them find these places with their own hard work.
I have hired areoplanes and photographed country long before google earth, i certainly don't advertise areas that i have spent long hard hours finding.
If i am off the mark, so be it, but some of us don't tell others where we go ! Is that a crime ? It seems to be !

I dont spend all day out there catch & releasing and for my mates that know me well I dont like that but happy to still fish for a bit in search for bycatch!

Ryan, just curious of the depth you got these? I also want to take some jigs up north this year, would you recommend upsizing the assist hooks?
sea-kem .... That day I was fishing the 60-80m and the assist hook size I was using was 4/0 so more than enough for northern lip fish like reds/rankins etc

Several years since being on here and nothing has changed...
I have probably inadvertantly done my bit to strengthen stock numbers as I haven't been fishing in 11 months. (maybe 3 times the year before that too)... imagine the stock numbers if I was still fishing. hehehe.
Well done Ryan, but still not as big as Kaseys that time.
