By-catch

went for a snapper bash last night, perfect almanac, perfect tidal coefficient, minor feed 4.45- 6.45pm, couldn't ask for more, alas NO SNAPPER.
But bizarrely we caught jumbo crayfish instead, not 1 or 2 but got 3 in the boat and lost another 3. Have caught crays on the line before but not in big numbers.
Not a bad by-catch.

I’m not a full bottle closer
I’m not a full bottle closer to half but are you allowed to catch them on a line as by catch ? not that I give a rats but with all the Hoo Haa around the regs curious .. good size in any case well done .

Happy with that, i'd keep the way you caught them under wraps next time though, big no-no catching them on a line
Grab a pot for that spot, could be a honey hole

Catching on line
hey Luke, can't find anywhere in the rules and regs that says it is illegal to catch them on a line, besides they were bycatch we weren't fishing for them.

Definitely not legal
I've also caught a jumbo cray by line from one of the wrecks off Rotto in 100m but it had to go back as definitely not a legal catch.
You can only take them using two methods; with pots meeting the Licence specification or by diving. "Divers may only catch rock lobster by hand, or by a hand-held snare or blunt crook. Spears, nets and similar devices that can damage rock lobster are illegal"

hi Mark, can you point out to me where in the rec fishing rules it states that you cannot catch crayfish on a line ? I have read the rules and can't find where it states you can't !

Rules state the permitted means
The rules state the permitted means of taking crays. You may be correct - give Fisheries a call and let them know about your situation, I'm sure they'll give you their interpretation.......
