Bought new prop

Was going to Perth for the weekend so I took my prop with me, thinking I would get a second prop with different pitch rate

went to "Just Propellers WA" in Osbourne Park, Michael looked at my prop, that I thought was 'ok' and put it on the test machine he has there and spun it like it would on the boat.

To my amazement it was running all over the place, it was pretty well stuffed as the photo suggests, but to a total novice it looked ok on the boat LOL

I decided there an then to replace it, so bought a 10.3 x 12 instead of the specified prop, as was advised this will get me out of the water and on the plane faster, going to test it out as soon as I finish this.

did they really tell you that

that prop looks fine apart from the obvious scratches and dings you need to do a lot more damage than that for it to be stuffed sounds like that machine of theres is a great sales pitch

Have trust it is stuffed

Wed, 2011-02-16 17:44

They did tell me, then showed me how it was stuffed.

I was not there expecting to buy a new prop, just get it looked at and maybe machined

It was definately not even and it wobbled on the shaft with no play on the rubber, as it was the blades that were bent and way outa shape

The 'machine' they use verified their opinion as I was invited to check it all out for myself, they set it up in my presence, it was not a set-up in any way..

Lets say I have 100% full TRUST in the company, this was all done after hours for me.

yeah i dont get it either - a bit of paint loss shouldnt affect it. and even to a novice, having something that would make it run all over the place should be fairly obvious (i.e. bent prop, twisted shaft or whatever)...

did they run the new one and the machine?? and if so how did it run differently...

now you have me worried about the bit of paint coming off my prop....

next motor will have ss

Wed, 2011-02-16 17:31

 Yes,

that was an idea at one stage, but it's only a 30 hp on a tinee

do they 'bend' when they hit the concrete ramp

I will knock the blade back and file off the rest so each is the same, next time I go to Perth I will take it back to "Just Props" and get them to make it perfect again

The old one looks pretty

Wed, 2011-02-16 17:21

The old one looks pretty nackered to me.  I was told once that the slightest nick, dent etc on a prop causes big power losses due mainly to cavitation.  Not sure if it's true or not but sounded logical to me?

There only alowed to run

Fri, 2011-02-18 05:47

There only alowed to run standard props that you get with the motor. They shape the prop and actualy make it thinner, they also cup the blade and bend it slightly for more pitch. Some guys snap blades off, but its supposed to be a very fine art.

Less flex, shaped a bit finer

Less flex, shaped a bit finer because of the properties as well.

recommendations were correct

Thu, 2011-02-17 17:42

Have just picked up the tinny from Peter at BOSUN Marine Dunsborough after it's 2st motor tune-up and took it straight to the boat ramp, put the motor up LOL (no more prop damage required)

and dropped the tinny into the water.

It started easily and reved freely, I faced her towards the open ocean and spun the handle, and whoosh..... she was out of the water and flying like never before

Congratulations for a job well done are due to Bosun Marine Dunsborough

now I can fully understand why the Honda Marine Manager had recomended him

I would definately recomend his services
(no affiliation with them)

I would definately stick with

Thu, 2011-02-17 22:30

I would definately stick with an ali prop. As stated when you hit something there's no give in stainless just a lot of damage to other things. Similar to an ali roobar takes the impact and softens the blow. Interesting thread.

Ali to SS is TLD to Tiagra if you ask me - no comparison - especially on the larger/heavier craft.

If the justification for ali is mainly protection if you hit something, everyone would have an ali boat as they are easier to repair than fibreglass if you hit something.....Its about performance.
