Bait tank Issues. Any Ideas?
Gday Guys,
Was after some info from someone regarding an issue im having with my live bait tank. Most of the time it runs fine but everynow and then it looses prime and wont suck water resulting in dead live bait very quickly up here in the heat in Broome.
You can hear the motor still working but it just wont pump, sometimes it take 5 mins and itll kick in again, other times it doesnt for several hours? Alot of the time it will be when moving from spot to spot it will stop and other times we will just be sitting there and it will will stop? As i dont have a hose/deck wash on board to reprime it and I dont feel real comfortable hanging out the back of the boat in the Kimberleys dues to big lizards with sharp teeth anyway is there anything anyone can recommend?
Any ideas much appreciated, Cheers Guys.

mmm
If it's a priming issue then maybe you could put a one way valve in the pipe ?
Just a thought.
Nothing worse than having all ones live bait dieing.

maybe look at a heavier duty
maybe look at a heavier duty pump. maybe the one you have isnt quite up to the job. also check the intake as sometimes you might get a small bit of sh@# stuck and it will take a bit to clear it.otherwise maybe invest in a deck wash. not that pricey and easy to install then just put a y junction on and run a hose off one and the wash down hose on the other

Get a newie
Had the same problems on my old rig ! It was a johnson cartridge type pump - pump looked in brand new condition, but the internal motor had corrosion and would work at weird and wonderful times - mainly not work when needed !!
Replace the pump, check the wiring ( all of it - including switches ) and use good quality crimps ( the type you can heat up and they seal )
I just replace mine every two years - depends on your usage though

Any pictures?
Can you post some pictures of the system, especially the pump position and suction hoses.

sorry mate no photos
Iana, if you can put a picture up, I can give you some advice as to the system you are running. The live bait tank on my Barcrusher incorporates a few more features and maybe confusing to explain.
An easy way, is to drop into a quintex dealer ( or others ) and check out their set-up on the top enders, and others, it's quite simple to see and you can compare to yours - 99% of the time, it is electric - but that's just my opinion.

Cheers guys, not electric at
Cheers guys, not electric at all because I can hear the pump still going but its just not pumping anything. Took it out yesterday and took abit of poly pipe also and when it stopped pumping I just blew some water up the inlet and it kicked it again... Not sure what else I can do to stop it from losing suction but..

Pickup
What does the pick up in the water look like?
is it cut on an angle (forward/backwards) or cut square?

If it sounds like its working but isnt
has to be an issue with blocked intake, output, or impellor. If its working but no suck, push the mayor culprit is the impellor on the pump.
I have a backup aquarium pump to keep them alive.
