Are you building a dog house?
Howdy All,
I had a thread going on the Fishing Discussion forum, but thought i would start one in the right spot.
About three weeks ago, I had a urge to do something silly and purchased the below tub for $150
It was in very poor condition, with the trailer pushing through the hull in some areas, further causing a frame to snap, and the aft starboard section of the hull to sag off 10mm.
First project was to get the boat off the trailer (that had no rollers) to see if the hull would straighten. With the help of 4 trolley jacks i was able to lift the boat off the trailer, and ease it down onto a timber trolley. Thankfully with the weight of the boat sitting on the right spot, the boat was straight again.
Next project was to high pressure blast out the hull to get a year worth of rotting plant matter out of it. I got most of the hull clean, but for some reason, none of the water coming in was going out of the bung holes (all 4 of them) which left me with a bit more of a task.
When i picked up the boat, the only bit of deck not removed was the sump in the transome. This only lasted a fortnight before it got attacked by a mad man with a diamond tip grinder. Under it was all sorts of sludge which took a long time, alot of water and a wet and dry vac to remove.
After a good few hours working on it (last long weekend), i finally got the hull to a point where i could start working on rebuild.
That got me to this weekend which had me up at 0715 on Sunday with the worlds nastiest hangover, but still with a plan to get alot done. Last weekends high pressure spraying exploits had me partially identify a serious rot problem in the transome, which after a few core samples with hole saws, ended with me cutting out around 70% of it and starting again. After having to go and replace a grinder, i was left with the below
Yesterday finished with a bit of glassing, primarily the below hole where the trailer went through the hull, but also, the new transome.
Next weeks plan, is another 10mm sheet of ply on the inside and outside of the transome (10mm on the outside to make it the same 25mm thickness as previous, and 10mm on the inside to ensure it is all properly strong, then reinforcing some of the frames.
The inspiration for the title was a question at the hardware store on Saturday when i filled the car with Plywood..
Due to sailing on saturday, this is just a sunday project so dont expect it to be done quickly.

good luck
But I think you are wasting your time. I know of a sound hull about that size you could probably have for free. PM if ya keen. I've been down this route and it is really false economics to be attempting/rebuilding something that is in such poor shape. You really gonna trust it? The fact that it wasn't even straight and has now 'settled' into shape should have alarm bells goin off in ya head.
Good luck but.

there is no v in the transom? may be ok in the river but I don't think its worth it either. I put up a link in your original post for a hull that would appear to be a better riding hull on a reasonable trailer.

Good Luck Swompa - I have to
Good Luck Swompa - I have to agree i would pick something else but dedication is half the battle and it looks like you've got that. As for the question of trusting it - given you built it you will be the one to know - can't be any worse than putting trust in a boat you bought and don't really know if you have rot (or how much) under your feet.
Once complete it would be fitting now to name it "Dog House"
Cheers

Thanks Paul.
You must be a top bloke with a name like that ;-)
Right now, no i wouldnt trust the hull in a fit. That is why i have not strapped a 75 onto the back and launched it.
I purchased the hull as is purely because i could actually see and physically touch what was underneath the deck. I wouldnt feel confident buying, or being given a run down boat with the deck on it, as i would just need cut it off and start again.
There will be a great deal of work put into this boat to ensure it will be strong and seaworthy when the time comes to make it splash. There will be alot of reinforcements fiberglassed in, and lastly, the hull/deck cavity will be filled with foam to ensure added stiffness and a bit of bouyancy if anything were to go wrong.
I am upgrading from a 3.8m tinny, so all you need to do is ask my wife about ride quality in the tinny to understand how much better this boat will be, even if in moderate conditions only.
Overall, this boat will be a step up to the bigger goal. I simply cannot afford to throw 40k at a boat now without going into too much debt, so this one will have to do. Hopefully, after I spend the time and effort do do things right at the start, i will have a safe and stable platform.

Good three days spent working
Good three days spent working on the tub.
Got the bow cut back to where I want it, with the new bulkhead installed. Got the new deck glued and glassed in as well as a couple more frames.
Also, i added another 110mm to the transome height so it will be a comfortable back rest/step when coming out of the water.
Just need to put a frame across the middle of the boat under the floor so it wont fold up when i roll it over in a couple of weeks.
One more week working on it then up to Exmouth.
Looks more like a boat shape now other than a pile of dirty fiberglass

Thanks mate. Opinions are
Thanks mate.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, some stink.
Over the past few weeks that I have been working on it, I have been lucky in the sense that my wife has been very keen to sit and do nothing on Sundays, so I go outside and work on the boat. I have had 5 or 6 good 8 hour days working on Sunday to get it where it is, as well as a couple of long weekends (convenient to have a RDO every 3rd Monday). It honestly doesn’t seem like it has been that much effort, but the work this far has been all about making it strong, not pretty. The boat is now at a point where I could bolt on the 20hp off the tinny and go for a squid, and not sink or spend the whole time twisting which is how it was when I got it. Once again, it is not pretty but it works.
The next stage (this weekend) is to glass over the timber frames that I have put in (couple of hours) then a temporary frame across the midships to make sure it doesn’t collapse when I roll it over.
To be honest, to get it to this point is very rewarding. It has cost me around $1200, mainly because all I had was a grinder, circular saw, jig saw so I had to buy the glass, resin, timber and a grinder (damn Ozito grinder has a diamond tip disc stuck in it)
Now the next thing is, how the hell do you roll a 5.5m boat that weighs a few hundred kg’s??
As said all along, it is not my perfect boat (7m plate Aluminium walkaround), but it is a step in the right direction, up from a 3.95m tinny.
Baby steps..
